Deer season isn't even over yet, and I'm already thinking about what to build next. Dang RADD.

After hunting in the timber in Missouri again this year I'm seriously thinking about building a 20" or 21" lightweight .308Win on a Rem700 SA. 30cal is the only caliber that I don't have in the safe.

Starting to look around for barrels. 308 is new to me. So, what twist should I be looking for? I plan on shooting 150 or 165gr Ballistic Tips or Partitions.

Thanks,
-Gene

Gene Im building one of those for me.- this are the specifications.-
Rem 700 short action
Lilja #2 barrel 19in long 3 Groove t11
High tech stock sheep hunters.
talley lightweight bases-rings aluminum
leupold 6x scope.
Cerakote on Metal and stock.
will show up when finished
and by the way .308 Caliber.

im going to try to use it with Barnes tsx tipped 130gr, that 11 twist should work.

Gene,

An 11 twist will work just fine; however, I'd lean toward a 10 twist just in case I decided to shoot heavier bullets.

If you are starting from scratch, how about a .300 Savage?

Sounds like a nice project. I would go with a 1:10 twist to cover all the bullet weight offerings.

Ah, a lightweight .308 Win... Perfect!

1:12 twist barrel is terrific for 150 - 165 gr bullets and will typically stabilize 180's as well. Mine also produce good accuracy with varmint weight 110's and even the very interesting 125 gr Ballistic Tip.

I prefer a 1:12, cut-rifled Krieger, but many different barrels work very well. The .308 is an incredibly forgiving cartridge, known for great accuracy with a wide variety of components.

The "95 Palma" reamer has produced excellent chambers for my barrels. It will accept factory ammo, but is still tighter than a standard chamber.

Love the 6x Leupold btw... Excellent all-around, lightweight, hunting scope.

Looking forward to seeing these light weight .308's make an appearance here!

BK - I'm also considering the .308 due to availability of ammo in a SHTF scenario. Might as well have something that I can feed with a common cartridge.

Guy - good info on the twist. Let's go one step farther. If I were to go with a heavier bullet and subsonic velocity either with or without a suppressor, would a 1:12 be okay for 180s? That scenario is a reach. I'm just playing what-if. This will be a <200yd deer thumper.

If I go 1:10 will it spin-out a 150 or 165?

As for optics, I'm thinking I may put a 2-7x Minox on it.

308 is becoming my favorite caliber! 168 grainers and Varget is awesome! A Tikka T3 or Savage Light weight in the middle or a Forbes, Kimber, or Remington Ti would be sweet if you could find one.

1:10 twist is just fine with the 165's too...

Don't have much experience with the heavy bullet/subsonic loads. A little, but not much..

I've had several .308s…. 1:12s work good, but may or may not shoot well with 180s….one of mine did and one didn't. Heavier? Like a 220gr …probably not so well but every rifle is a little different.

I've also had 1:10 and a 1:11….both shot pretty good.

I'm liking the 150s in my .308…probably plenty of bullet for any deer that walks. I've looked very hard at the Kimber Mountain Ascent….$$$ but a nice looking factory featherweight.

Fair enough. If that's a factor, then good call on the chambering.

G'Day Fella's,

Creedmore, it must been in the mid eighties (1985 ish), when I "Pug Ugly" was built!
Its a Remington Mohawk action with a 20" Tobler .30 Cal, 1 in 12" barrel, chambered for the .308Win cartridge and weighs 3 Kilograms or 6 1/2 pound (ish).
It has an early HS Precision stock and some bits that I made/modified for it (like the Muzzle Brake/Weaver base and Davidson Aluminum bolt shroud etc)!
It shoots better than I can but the recoil was a bit hard on my cervical spine injuries, hence the M/brake!!!

Hope that helps

Doh!

Homer,

That Pug is anything but ugly.
I like her even if she has a handicap. She's afflicted with the right hand bolt and I think left hand bolts are beautiful.

Is the Rem Model 7 action a little smaller & lighter than the Rem 700 short action?

Might save a few ounces there...

My friend Dani shoots a compact .308 by SAKO. I don't know what it weighs for sure, a little over 6 lbs. It's got a very light barrel contour that somehow is also fluted, and short, 20" - 22". Very accurate with the 125 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip. That's the only bullet we've tried from it. Had to shorten the stock a little for her, Dani isn't very tall.

Her first buck:

That little Sako is SHARP! I really dig that little rifle. Looks like it could be a great hunting companion.

Love it! I like a little character, and that Mohawk action is just goofy enough to pull it off!

Guy - that's a nice Sako. I was wondering how small a barrel contour you can go and still have it fluted. The folks at McGowen have been very helpful in the barrels I've gotten from them - I know I can get a #3 contour fluted, wondering if I can go #2 contour and fluted. May have to call Dan and find out . . .

This is what a .308 will do at 150mts, Sierra 165gr spbt and a dose of imr4064, was killed last week at the state of Sonora, by the spouse of one of my clients.

Very nice pictorial testimony to the effectiveness of the .308, CZ. Your client's wife and Dani in Guy's post are using that cartridge to good advantage.
