I purchased a real old Ruger M77 with the tang safety last winter for an action to build a lightweight 300WM with. My plan got changed when the rifle proved to be a tackdriver with almost anything I can load for it. The wood stock it came with is heavy and real beat up.

Now I'm looking for a really lightweight synthetic stock to put on it to shave some weight for an elk hunt I have lined up for next fall. I'm thinking of spending some money and trying to get one under 20oz with the pad. The current stock weighs 39oz so I could shave off quite a bit. Any ideas what stock is best or what is available for this old rifle? I'm thinking of an MPI.

You need carbon kevlar stock. McMillan Edge should be 20oz Bell @ Carlson make one too.

Under 20 oz. with pad is gonna be tough. Mickey EDGEs will probably be more like 24 oz., and I think I remember reading that the Rugers with the angled for end screw, couldn't be made in a EDGE anyway. Two I would look into are the Brown Pound'r and the Lone Wolf (don't know the model... Summit maybe?).

With that light of stock, that sorta heavy barrel might make the gun pretty nose heavy.

My buddy just put the Carbelite on the older M77 I sold him. Nice stock but it more than 20ozs though. Seems like BK put up some nice options as well. Scotty

Thanks for all the replys

MPI said they could do it, but it will be spendy. About $950 all together with a limbsaver pad once they have it bedded and installed. I still might do it anyway, it will still be less money than I would have spend on building a new rifle from the action since this barrel is a shooter. Then if I want a new barrel someday I'll only be a re-barrel and bedding job away.

Doh! I totally forgot about MPI, and they are right in my back yard!
