Little Brother's 257 Weatherby

Ah, they're ready to hunt. Even elk.

Nice work! Great rifle.

Guy

That was the plan. I looked at 243's, 308's, 25-06, and 270.. Any of those would have been excellent as well. I just happened to find this Vanguard. I know it can be loaded lighter and may send them up some 85 grain stuff, just for coyotes and such, but I know that 120 PT will handle anything. They hunt deer and bear at home, so I know there will never be a bullet problem, up close with that bullet. I also know that 120 PT will handle elk, should they wanna hunt with me. They asked "why a Partition"... Well, that started a 15 minute talk, with glossy eyes and hope! HA!

My brain works one way, the worst case, and I know if they happen to make a bad shot (looking at their groups, I should be taking lesson's from them), the PT will do it's best to recover an animal. I'd have a hard time believing they'd catch one in a deer, with anything less than a stem to stern shot. Good BC and with the zero we put on the rifle, they have a 0-400 yard rifle with only about 7-8" of drop at 400 yards.. That sorta trajectory makes it easy to make hits, good hits.

They are taking it out to 300 yards when they get home to verify it, but my cousin will tudor them out there.. Hoping for the best.

That Vanguard has an EXCELLENT trigger fella's. Can't say enough good about it. If all the S1's had triggers, out of the box like this one, guys would go nuts for them. It broke at 2.8lbs' and was perfect. No creep, overtravel, nothin, just clean. I knew from the moment I touched it, it would shoot..

It also cleaned up very quick with BTE CU2. Not sure if it has a better than average barrel or what, but I wished they had two of them... With a good fiberglass stock on it, there isn't much more a guy could ask for. I mounted the scope up in some Leupold bases and PRW's. Should be as rock solid as it needs to be for a young hunter.

That old Redfield tracked better than some of my Leupolds have. It seemed plenty clear too.. We shall see. I get first text notification on all shots taken by them!

Nice grab on the Vanguard, Scotty! You know I am partial to the hive. I suspect you've nearly ruined those boys for anything but another 'bee when the time comes to add a rifle. Once they get very good with the 257, let me know and we'll go on a hunt for a nice 300 for them. (Of course, you know I'm thinking, they could use a good 270'bee, too, but I'm trying to be unobtrusive here...)

Looks like you had a ball, as did they. Looking forward to seeing some good game down from them in the coming years. Nothing beats getting a youngster started on the road with their own rifle.

Without a doubt Dub. This Weatherby is everything a good rifle should be. Good shooter out of the box. Did pretty well with the cheap Norma 100 grain ammo, so they have a backup. That stuff is 35.00 a box and it comes with EXCELLENT Norma brass.

I know it has made me snoop a little on a Ultralight 257 Wby.. It's one of the ones I have no need for with the 264 Win Mag, but need is so low in my brain housing group, it is discounted before it hits my ears.

This is a late entry but has all the makings of "Quote of the Year."

Pretty neat to see your little bro's doing so well and the 257 Wby is off the charts cool 8) With 120 gr PT's it will be very versatile, deer to moose easily.... The Vanguards seem to be an excellent value.

I think so as well Gerry. I loaded the 120 Swift's in my wife's 25-06 at 3140, accuracy was excellent, so I was thinking the PT's at probably another 100-150FPS should be good to go as well. I know I wouldn't think too much about hunting it. Flat shooting, easy on the shoulder, and it carries good energy as well.

The only thing I don't really like is the plastic stock, but as they go, they are fairly rigid, and it'll give them something to upgrade in the future..

That was the first thing I did with my S1. It had the soft tupperware plastic stock unlike the ridged plastic stock that came on my M70. The 300Bee popped the front sling swivel stud out with a bipod attached with in the first 20 rounds. Yes there is no comparison and the 300 creates more stress.
A nice Bodys laminated stock with a straight comb would accommodate both the left and right handed shooter. You could see an improvement in their shooting skills. :)
