Loads for 300 WSM

Hi I see your posts about having a model 70 coyote lite in 300 WSM. I have the same, stainless fulted barrel and a B&C stock. Your post says yours shoots .5 groups w/ 150gr BTs. I have one reload with 150gr BTs 58gr of IMR4064 that shot .4 first time and .5 2nd, but I decided to go to 180gr AccuBond, I havent had the luck with the 180 as I did w/ the 150. My best w/ the 180s is 54gr of IMR4064 = a .8" group, nosler dosent list this power for 180s, I made it up. By the way I think 4064 is my favorite powder. I have tried 4831 4350 w760, 2nd best would be IMR 4350 w/a .85' group, everything else shoots over an inch. Any loads or insite will be appricated, I will post this in the reload forum so I get other insite too.

ps I usually set bullet depth about .015 off lands. that makes oal 3.003"
 
I've got a Browning A-bolt stainless stalker that seems to love 165 or 168 grain bullets. My best loads are with 60 grains of H380. It regularly shoots .4 to .5 inches at 100 yds.

I recently tried some 150gr Accubonds in 3 or 4 powder combinations and couldn't get anything under an inch and some loads were considerably worse.
 
My A-Bolt in 300 wsm loves 67 grains of Reloder 19 under the 180 gr Partition. Velocity is 2960 fps and accuracy is a consistent 3/4 MOA with 3 shot groups.
 
I've tried a number of different bullets/powder combinations in my Kimber montana and the 165 partitions win hands down with IMR4831. I learned a long time ago that a 165 grain Partition will drop Elk, Deer and any other like sized animal without a problem. Shot placement is the key.

I have the same gun... Just curious what your COL was???
 
I have worked up loads for a couple of 300 WSM rifles now and they both wound up shooting best with the same load of IMR 4831.

The first was my buddy's Winchester Model 70 SS Camo. I tried several combinations in it but it shot best with loads that consisted of a Winchester case, a Fed 215M primer, 68 grains of IMR 4831 and either a 180 Sierra Pro Hunter or the 180 Nosler Partition. It shot consistant groups under an inch every time I took it to the range.

The second was my new Remington 700 XCR Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Limited Edition. It much prefers the exact same load except that it shoots the Sierra's a lot better than the Noslers. I shot this Remington this morning and three groups of three shots each with 180 Sierra Pro Hunters measured 0.80, 0.86, and 0.48 inches.

I have tried RL 19, H 4350, RL 22, and N 560 in these rifles but they both shoot best with IMR 4831.

OAL length used in the model 70 was 2.89 inches while in the Remington I had to use 2.86 inches to fit in the magazine.

I wish my Remington would shoot the Nosler Partitions better, but so far it just refuses to do so. (They shoot groups that average about 2 inches.)

R Flowers, What kind of velocity did you get with IMR 4831 and the 180's? I found it very accurate in my Browning ,but, it was quite slow.
 
In response to steve4102 I recorded the following velocities in the 300 WSM rifles I tested:

Using 68 grains of IMR 4831 the average velocties were:

Winchester model 70, 180 grain Sierra = 3021 fps, 180 Nosler Partition = 3052 fps

Remington model 700, 180 Sierra = 2987 fps, 180 Nosler Partition = 2993 fps

Both of these rifles have 24 inch barrels.

As a follow up on my previous posts on the 300 WSM I have been experimenting with that gun a little more.

I shot a wild hog the other day with the 180 grain Sierra Pro Hunter and could not have been happier with its performance. We caught up to a group of six hogs right at dark and they were hauling ass trying to get away. They were all about 200 pounds and all boars I believe. (Probably littermates)

They were about to go over a hill and get away. I picked on the last one and shot him right in the ham at about 60 or 70 yards. He went down squealing and spinning. My dad busted the next one in the bunch and he did the same.

The one I shot tried to run but only made it about 30 yards. The one dad had shot with a 270 Winchester using 130 Partitions was still spinning round making a heck of a racket.
When he stopped we both busted him again putting him down for good.

The first one that I shot was found to be shot right in the left ham. BUT, that 180 Sierra traveled clear up into his chest. When I gutted him I poured the lungs out like jello. It was so dark we were gutting them using a flashlight, I did not find the bullet.

The one my dad hit first hit had all pass throughs. The 130 Partitions and the 180 Sierra's had all went clear through.

That bullet and load worked well, but I just felt like I wanted a little more velocity. I tried some 165 Accubonds in this rifle and am well pleased. A load of 67 grains of H 4350 in a Winchester case and using a Fed 215M primer pushes the 165 AccuBond to 3168 fps.
The group shot this morning was 0.85 inches. The best part is that this load shoots to the same point of impact as the 180 grain loads. I tried IMR 4350, IMR 4831, RL 19, and RL 22, but the H 4350 performed the best. (For velocity and group size)
 
My 300 WSM shoots the best with 165 BT's in front of 69.5g of w760. This is above the max in some reloading manuals including nosler's so beware. The load shows no pressure signs in my gun and was derived moving a tenth of a grain at a time from 68.5. I made it up to 69.9 and started having my groups open up and worked back to the most accurate. The accuracy level is great. consitantly under .4 including my last 5 shot 100 yard group of 0.291.

I have also had luck with 180 g prohunters with w760 and 200g gamekings with magpro. I have yet to find a bullet I could not get into the .5 and under range consistantly.

The first thing you need to reload these is a franklin arsenal drop tube. If you don't have one, get one. Especially, if you intend on using heavy bullets.
 
Strange so many find 68 gr of IMR 4831 to work so good. My mod 70 coyote lite shows signs of excessive pressure with only 67 gr. But also what I have done was look at my best 150 gr bullet load, 58 gr IMR 4064 and reduced it for 180s. Strarted at 50 gr and worked up to 54 gr. So far 54 gr of IMR 4064 is my best load, posting a group of .8" at 100yds.

Does anyone have any accurate loads that they wouldn't mind sharing for the 300 WSM tested in a Winchester Model 70?
 
No problem. All those guys do is basically work on shortmags all day. That forum use to be shortmags.org
