Hello, wanting to see some other peoples loads with the E-tip 180 in a 300 win mag
Thanks
Ralph

Ralph,

Welcome to the forum. If others have tested loads, I'm certain they'll shortly post them. I've shot the E-Tip in several cartridges, but not in the 300WM. The Nosler technicians recommend using the mid-range load from the Nosler Guide as your maximum. In my experience with several cartridges, that seems like an accurate suggestion. You may obtain slightly more velocity from higher charges, but pressure can spike quickly and accuracy may be degraded. What have you tried so far?

Hi Ralph, welcome to the forum :)
I have not loaded for the 300win mag but one of my hunting partners has used it for decades. I know that he is partial to IMR 4350 not sure of amounts.
It might be a good powder to explore  . How long have you been loading.
Looking forward to photos and stories.

Blessings,
Dan

Ralph,

Welcome to the forum.

RL 22 is an excellent powder in the 300 WM. As mentioned, the mid range load is considered MAX with the E-Tip. The longer bearing surfaqce of the E-Tip generates higher pressures and they spike very quickly. The E-Tip also likes a lot of jump so start them at .100" off the lands.

Thanks for the replies. As of yet I have not loaded any. I have some 7825 and 4831, I will probably try those first just to see how they work.

sask boy, I have been hunting since 8 years of age, many different 4 legged critters to every bird that flys. I also have reloaded since the age of 14, now I'm a little grayer and slower at 50:)
The gun I am shooting is base on a Remington action with a 26" Shilen barrel 1 contour heavier. Darn thing seems to gain weight every year along the mountains becoming steeper too.
I live in california, and big brother in his infinite wisdom has banned lead bullets in certain areas.

I loaded 6 with 70gr of imr4831 .050 off the lands and went to my club to try them out before a barbecue. I was in a little hurry and pulled at least one, they ran right at 3050fps and grouped about 1" (barring the pulled ones) through a 26" Shilen 1 contour heavier barrel. It was probably me, so I will load some more at varing jump and see. Doubt I can go that much more powder before pressure problems creep up
Oh I'm going to try some slower 7828 and see if I can get 3100 which is what I really would like

RTK,

Seat the bullet .100" off the lands. The E-Tips like a lot of jump.

Thanks, I'll move further that way faster than I was thinking

Welcome to the forum

Since 1970 my standard off of the shelf, 300 win mag has shot sub 1/2 min groups with H-4350 with most brands of 180 grain bullets. For hunting, use the PT or AB for better performance on game. Don't worry about 3100, the Win Mag has plenty of steam.

Have you shot the E-tip at longer distances with slower speeds and seen good expansion???

Have some data for you gents. I have been doing some load work up on the 180 E-tip running through my 300 mag sporting a 26 inch Shilen barrel, 1-10 twist, trued action and tipping the scale at 11lbs. Never realized it weighed that much, no wonder the hills keep getting stepper every year:)
First off I do not recommend using the loads I am, one should always work up starting at least 2-3 grains below max or in the middle of Noslers recommended loads for their other bullets as stated to me.
I found the sweet spot at .100 give or take off of the lands running 71.5grs of IMR4831. They are running right around 3100+/- and the groups I shot today ranged from .297 to .497. I also tried IMR7828 and as long as the velocity was at or very close to 3100 fps it shot well too.
The E-tips seem to need a little more speed to stabilize than most other bullets.

Thanks for all the help guys

That would be a fearsome load, RTK. Congratulations on finding what works so exceptionally well in your rifle.

Thanks Doc, I am quite pleased with that load myself and since I live in california and have a few "lead free" zones, I figured it was time to give the Etip a try and see how well I could get them to shoot.
I will be using them for everything I go after this year from deer to elk, and the occasional coyote:)

Undoubtedly, the E-Tips will stand you in good stead as you hunt them. I've used Barnes TSX in a variety of cartridges over the years, and more recently I used the .277 calibre 130 grain E-Tip in my 270WSM to take moose and elk. The bullet performed precisely as expected.

I'm shooting them out of my 20" 300win mag at 2850fps. At the range i shot 3 3shot groups at 300yrds one day all under 1 3/4". I then used them on a blacktail hunt and killed a nice mature 4x4 with them. Little under 200yrds. My opinion, since i can shoot less tough bullets at deer. I'll stick to using the Etip 180gr on elk if i get the chance. I'm not used to having deer shot through both lungs with a 300win mag run off like i missed them. It did not make it far.
