Love RL-22 and MRP

Love RL-22 and MRP, they both had my 180gr bullets over 2700fps with a 22" barrel in my 30-06 and no flattened primers and I can't put anymore in my cases and my brass is looking very good and ejects easily. MRP gave the highest velocities of 2754fps but not as accurate as RL-22 that gave me 2724fps. Will be tweeking my 180gr load next week, because the grand kids are here now and will be here until Sunday so my time is taken.

Neither is the Marlin XL7 throwing a round out of the group, I fixed that by increasing and stabilizing the fore-end tension and now there is no movement of the stock at the fore-end even when I try and twist it with my hand. It has taken a big effort to finally get here, but I am, "so it was all worth the effort." Will post more next week as I tweak loads.

That's great news, but honestly, RL22 is a STAPLE of my bench. I haven't seen much that RL22 doesn't do well in magnum sized cases or 06 based cases with heavier bullets. Works well in the 243 with 105's as well. Overall, I am a huge fan, and wanted to try MRP as it is supposed to be a little better yet, but I don't think anything will ever dislodge RL22 from being a favorite.

Yeah, IMR4350, RL-22, IMR7828 and W760 have a long reach on my reloading bench and that is not to say I don't have other favorites but I do like these four for all purpose general work for so many cartridges and loads.

I've had EXCELLENT results from RL-22 in a variety of cartridges:

6mm Rem w/95 - 105 gr bullets
.25-06 w/115's
7mm Rem mag w/160 - 175's
.30-06 with 180's
.300 Win mag with 180 & 200's

It's just great stuff - though... time to time I've seen some problem with POI shifts due to temp changes.

Have also read elsewhere that MRP and RL-22 are essentially the same powder. Have no confirmation of that, and have never tried MRP, but the rumor has been floating around for many years.

I read the same thing about MRP and RL22--- they were in my 378 WBY for sure!

Also MRP2 = RL 25....so they say.

They are not actually the same but very close, made by the same people but specs for Norm and their MRP is different than the specs for Alliant RL-22. Example, I Q/L has them a grain apart and in some loads for 180gr bullet 2 grains apart, yet, 66grs of MRP will fill my case to exactly the same place 65grs of RL-22 will and if I use 66grs RL-22 it will be over the neck rim. They are close but not the same.

I was given that intel by none other than Harmut Broemel. I suspect he knows a thing or two about powders.

Well, i wrote Norma three years ago and told me there is a difference. My load work bears their info out. Now they must be close and for fun I will be loading this coming week the same charge amount and see the velocity, ES and SD difference using all the same components and OAL. I have done this before but will do it again. Lets put it this way, they are so close I can live with RL-22 because it is easier for me to get a hold of. I also, will write Norma once more and see what they tell me this time.

Will have to send a letter, but will do it and will keep their response this time.

My Ruger 30-06 loves RL22 and the Norma 200 gr. bullets and the 220 gr. FMJ Woodleighs, I got them to shoot to the same POI. Haven't used their powder though.

I've got some RL-22 on hand that I'm going to use on Hornady 139 grain SST and 154 grain SST in my 7Rem.Mag.I heard that it was as good as 4350 which I also have some on hand. Hope that both of these loads work out good for me.I like IMR and Alliant powders. Ya'll have a good day.

7mm's Forever and a 30 cal. will "Slam Dunk Um"

Rl22 has been one of my favorites since I started using it many years ago in the 25-06 with 115g NBTs and the 300 Win Mag with 180g NBTs for several friends and family members. Over the years I have tried it in most of my calibers that was applicable and never remember a time where it performed poorly. One particular that stands out is the 7 RM with 140-175s. Super accurate, low ES, and good velocity over wide range of weights and bullets.

One and only problem I seem to encounter is lot to lot variance. But that happens with every powder so its not an overly big deal to me. cronograph them and get the velocity back to where it needs to be and life is usually great again.
