I am in need of 5 or 10 round mags for an M1A. Until I am able to move from my current residence, this is the only way I can legally shoot my rifle. Even a link to a source would be helpful. Currently the online auctions are in a price gouging frenzy. Painful.

I'd check with local law enforcement to be sure, but you may be able to install a block in a higher cap magazine that reduces capacity. BT

I've moved my hi-cap mags to a safe state. I don't plan on living here much longer, no reason to permanently mod them. Thanks for the idea though.

Also looking for a solution to make my pre-ban rifle legal. It has the front sight assy with the dreaded bayonet lug/flash hider. Surely someone will be ginning up a front sight without a FH/comp assy attached. Just a threaded cap which I can stake will work. /imbeciles

The type of block I mentioned is removable - like a plug in a shotgun tube magazine.

Are you saying existing pre-law guns/mags became illegal? After passage of the 1994 AWB, pre-ban guns weren't affected. There was quite a market for "pre-ban" guns in the later 1990s. BT

Pre-bans(11+ rd capacity) will become illegal shortly. You must destroy them or sell them outside of NY. This isn't a repeat of the 1994 AWB. Magazines may have the capacity to hold 10 rds only if they were purchased prior to the new law signing but it will be illegal to carry more than 7 rds in these 10rd mags. Any new mag cannot carry more than 7 rds.

A Pre-Ban mag which can accommodate more than 10 rds can be permanently modified so that it will not carry more than 7 rds and thus make it legal.
