hello my dearest internet pals!
I've got a dilemma........
I have two M70 actions.... one short and one long.
I have 3 barrels.... 243win, 280rem, and 7x57
I was planning on using the 280rem barrel on the long action and building a 280AI.....
I'd dearly love to use the 7X57 barrel on the short action.....
Winchester used the long action when cambering for 7x57....
the mag box is 3.00 inches on a SA m70....... sammi length on the 7x57 is like 3.05 inches
I think it can be done...... but do you think it will feed okay?

Sounds like you need another action.

The 7X57 will work on a short action but you'll be handicapped in some of your load options, especially in terms of the sexy sleek boat tails and any of the monolithics available today.

If you're building a lightweight woods gun, no problem. A 150 Partition will work fine in the shortened envelope you'll be working with. Even easier with the stubby Speer 145 grand slam or slightly sleeker 145 Hot-core. You'll still be able to use almost any 130 grain bullet.

I have this problem in a .280 rem built on a K98 action. I'm limited to flat base, deep seating or lighter bullets to work in the action.

It is way cool but it's like taking a knife to a gun fight. Severely handicapping yourself before you start. Save it for a long action.

Go with the mauser and use the long action! The 7x57 caliber is great when seated out long enough for the heaviest bullets.

I saw a M70 action on GB with out the bolt, I think it was advertised as pre 64 for around 300. I bought a complete rifle for less.

I COMPLETELY agree with this.. Being able to seat out to 3.1 is a great advantage with the 7x57 and your right Chet, the 7x57 is VERY cool. RL17 and W760 work really well in this cartridge. Loaded to modern PSI's, it'll easily run 2900 with 140's and 2700's real easy with a 22" barrel. My son's 7x57 is an awesome shooter and it is so slick. Just a fantastic rifle/cartridge combo. Love the little Mauser..
