Hi fellas, I've been looking at a .416 rem mag that has been magna ported, does anyone have any experience with this, or has shot a rifle that has been magna ported?..If so, what was your findings on any reduced recoil, and or muzzle jump etc?
Thanks in advance,
Regards,
Lou

I've never shot a rifle with Magna Porting but have shot pistols and it helped to control the muzzle flip in short barreled magnum pistols

It does help quite a bit but nothing like a brake.

Yeah, same as others. Helps decrease muzzle jump which feels like less recoil. It's not a horrible thing in my opinion.

Exactly.

One of my 340 Weatherbys is Magna-Ported, one has a brake. The one with the Magna-Porting definitely has more recoil, but muzzle jump is minimal. It just pushes straight back at you.

My S&W 629 in 44 Mag is Magna-Ported as well. It seemed to have a bit more recoil than the 44 Mag Taurus Raging Bull I sold, and the Raging Bull had holes for porting rather than the lines of the Magna Port.

I prefer a brake for the feeling it gives when using a hard recoiling caliber.

The Magna Porting reduces felt recoil by 15-20%, most of which is from muzzle jump.
Just add a Pachmyer Decelerator recoil pad and you will be all set. The recoil of the 416 Rem is more of a big
shove, kind of on the order of the 375 H&H.

I heard the same things regarding my 340, and the 416 gives more recoil.
My ported 340 has a Pachmayr pad on it, and the only shove it felt like is like Mike Tyson happened to give my shoulder a "shove" during a boxing match. You can sight it in and work up a load, but if you shoot 15-20 times you'll want to move on to a different rifle and you'll know it the next day.

I don't think that MagnaPorting really reduces recoil by the alleged 15-20%; I think that by reducing muzzle jump it just changes how the recoil is perceived.

Hate to be redundant but the comments on muzzle jump are dead on, at least with handguns.
I have three ported handguns and the porting was to keep the muzzle down for target reacquisition.
Have a 10mm, 357 sig, and 40 all ported, and at least for me it works.
I would agree w the previous poster, not real sure about a20% reduction. Some, ok.
JD was dead on, the push instead of up is straight back.

I'm going off memory guys but I thought I read 15-20%. I looked into MP for my 338 RUM
But went with the Williams Brake.

My son has an 18" 1895, 45-70 and I had a 22", 1895, .45-70 both Marlins. Shooting both of them side by side with the same loads, the Magna Ported barrel has less muzzle jump and maybe 15%+/- less recoil. I can't see any difference in group size.

I have owned two weapons, that were Magna-ported. JD says it for me.

I don't doubt that's what they quote, as I've seen this percentage before.
Note, however, that their website says "up to" 15%:
http://www.magnaport.com/rifle.html

While I don't have any way to quantify the reduction, in my experience I would not put it at 15%. YMMV.

Thanks Guys, the most I've shot in a day with my .375 H&H was about 30 rnds of pretty stout 300gr loads without any recoil issue. I'm just guessing that a .416 with a 400gr pill that has been ported would have about the same felt recoil as the .375 H&H (without any brake/porting)

Thanks again,
Lou

I have a mag-na-ported barrel on my .25-06Rem. It does reduce muzzle flip and so aids my view of quarry reaction to bullet impact. Helpful addition but those nearby on a range or when hunting won't appreciate the loudness of the report & muzzle blast.
The shooter is affected least in terms of blast.

JD,
Wasn't being critical about the 20%, just didn't feel like 20 to me, I guess.

No worries buddy.

I think Magna Porting has its place but its not the most effective recoil reduction system.

Yup Jim, I agree with you pal, I just wanted some feed back on this, thanks guys :)

I agree mag-na-porting doesn't do much to reduce recoil. But it can help significantly with muzzle flip. Not sure about the big cal. rifles though...I think probably a break would be more useful. ATB

what I don't like about magna-porting is the sharp ear piercing bark when its not feasible to wear ear protection (hunting) I shot a 300 bee once that was magna ported, the blast was terrible, so bad I actually lost my sight for a second and my ears rang for weeks, My braked 7mm Allen mag is loud, but not near that painful.
