Well I got a new 300 RUM for my birthday yesterday oh boy I cant wait to start putting this thing together. First I want to get the bolt lightened and maybe some flutes in the barrel and have it teflon coated. Then get a bell and carlson tan stock for it. and I will probably need a break too I guess. Any thing I should know about or look into haveing done? It is jsut a plain black sps which is how I wanted it so I could trick it out how I want.

Sounds pretty cool and that you will be occupied having fun for a while. :)

I would not recommend puting flute on an already mounted barrel. Generally it's done as part of the barrel making process, before stress relieving ect. Sometimes it will cause your shots to wander.

I agree with A_S on the fluting. I would recommend 180 to 200gn bullets for it using Retumbo. My 300RUM loves the 200AB, 95gn of Retumbo, GM215M primers and a COL of 3.635. The magazine will limit the COL to around 3.67, unless you have a gunsmith install the Brownell's magazine extension kit (requires machining of the action).
I personnally don't like muzzle brakes, and shooting the 200AB with a MV of 3137 isn't that bad, but I also have a thumbhole laminate stock on mine with the Remington R3 recoil pad. Lastly, get a trigger job done. I had mine set at 2 3/4lbs. FYI, you may have to replace the trigger as I recently got an XCR 338RUM and my gunsmith wasn't able to get it to adjust, so a Rifle Basics trigger assembly was installed and set at 2 1/2lbs.

Good luck with your new rifle and keep us posted on your load development and modifications. Oh yeah, pictures, we want pictures!!!!!!!

yeah I probably wont flute it as I imagine at somepoint down the line I may have it wrapped by Christensen arms or have the barrel replaced all together so that would be money down the drain.

Hopefully I wont ned a new trigger as it has the new style x trigger and it feels good as it has a nice break that is smooth just heavy.

Any suggestions on type or style of break?

Any suggestions on a stock? I was thinking b&c medalist with the aluminum bedding block. but am not opposed to a thumb hole laminate as I really like laminate what are the pros and cons of those options?

I will post pics as I progress right now it is just a plain jane all black sps

Congratulations on your new rifle. You are going to love the 300 RUM.
You have yourself an awesome bride! Great BD present too.

nitis,

Congrats on the .300RUM... they are great rounds. As aleady mentioned the 180gr & 200gr bullets are great in these..... mine likes them both equally well.
I have two rifles with the X-trigger as well... I agree they break clean, but with a fairly heavy pull. If you take it in, just be prepared that it's going to be a pain in the @*^&%$%$..... the last one I haven't even attempted. The first won't adjust of which I'll put a new trigger in it.

Shoot it first as is... it might supprise you ... let us know the results.

can someone recomend some scope mounts for me I have always used weaver style but want to try something new and maybe better with this I was thinking about the onepiece DEDNUTZ? Any comment? I am open to suggestion. Oh I guess I should mention I will be using a leupold varix III 3.5-10 because thats what I have I want a 14 power but dont have the money right now and realistically dont need more than 10.

EGR base, Badger rings, S. Carlock brake, trued action/rebarrel, skim bedded aluminum blocked HS precision, Bushnell Elite 6500...man this list is getting expensive.

Always nice to see a new rifle join the safe.

+1 on Talleys. I've had good success with them. Leupold dual dovetails would be another good choice.

ok which talleys the regular rings and bases or the onepiece aluminum?

and yeah I think she is a keeper she got me a shotgun for christmas once too.

Yeah ya better keep her. My wife has bought me a 300 RUM, an O/U shotgun, a muzzle loader, a jeep, and a guided elk hunt. AND she doesnt complain when I buy something else like a new #1, or a new 22 for one of the kids. Good ones are hard to find!

You will probably get a lot of opinions on which stock. I recently got a thumbhole lam for my SPS 7mmRUM. I really like the feel of the thumbholes. Here's a link to where I got my stock - comes with a Pachmeyer Decelorator recoil pad too. I bought the "Timber" version.

I hope you have brass if you are planning to reload for it. Brass is veryy hard to find.

Rem 300RUM brass is available, but the price has gone up. Cabela's has some in stock, but the price for a bag of 100 is $90.

You'll just have to check around your local stores and online. I frequent, MidwayUSA, Shooters Pro Shop, Cabela's, Graf & Sons, Gamaliel Supply, and Mid South Shooters Supply. I know there are many more online business, but prices are around the same price range. Some online sources are selling bag of 50 for $50.
