MAMA came through!!! new 300 RUM

Nitis, we each have our own style, but I like to get as much as I can out of the money I invest in my rifle.

The Leupold 3.5-10 is a fine scope. It's a solid platform with no parallax, which is more important then the power. Besides, new scopes are expensive.

So, for now, see what it will do with some good reload. It amazes me how often I can shoot 1/2-3/4" groups with a factory gun, good glass, and handloads. Often the only things I have to do are freefloat the barrel, and adjust the trigger. If you want to do something more, trigger (if it needs it), then stock. This way you have a good solid platform established when you decide to print the action, and add a custom fluted barrel.

I plan on shooting this barrel till it is shot out which could be a lifetime for me as I would rather invest in a stock and more better glass

I definately will be snatching up some brass as soon as I can and have feeleers out in a few states that can help me out.

Is there any disadvantage to using the talley onepiece ringbase set? I really like the simplicity the only thing that worries me is they are aluminum and my uncle who is a gun nut always steered me towrds weaver style steel for strength but I must admit I like the simplicity of the one piece especially since they screw down from the top and not horizantally

I will definately shoot it before I do anything drastic as far as stocks etc because if I dont need to change anything I wont then I have money for other stuff

Can anyone tell me if the butt pads will interchange from an sps to a bdl? I like the pad on my 700 lss 270 wsm better than this new remington pad the old style is made by limbsaver I think and I really like those.

I don't think the LSS/wood stock recoil pads are interchangeable with the syn stocked guns. I could be wrong.

Hey Rich

do you feel that the thumbhole helps with recoil as in your wrist and arm taking some of the abuse away from your shoulder? I really was not wanting the weight of a laminate but they do look good however then I would need to get it bedded at an additional cost.

My feeling is that they help in the control of the rifle. The extra weight does help with the recoil, so I deal with the weight, which isn't much of an addition. Having a good recoil pad, R3, Limbsaver, Decelorator, helps out a lot. I couldn't imagine shooting a RUM or larger bore with the old harder pads let alone the classic steel plate.

Nitis, on average, the fewer the pieces, the stronger and more stable the base/ring set. Given a choice, one piece, low to the rifle mount is normally best. Since we have a tendancy to use our super mags at longer ranges, that's a +1 for the one piece.

Shooting out the barrel on this gun will probably take around 2500-3000 rounds, depending on the load you settle on. That's a lot of bench time, so you might as well be comfortable. The heavier stock, at the proper length, with a great pad will greatly increase pleasure during those moments following the trigger pull.
