Meat friendly .270 Winchester "woods load"?

That 6mm Remington with 100gr Corlokts was real popular in the part of East Tx I'm originally from.

Corelokts are a good bullet in numerous calibers and bullet weights. In some combo's it's a quite impressive all shots budget bullet. But in 6mm I was not impressed with it on rib shots, although it never failed in the end.

Rib shots resulted in dead deer but often required a 100 yd tracking job. Used that way it seemed to just go through with little to no shocking power. I shot a doe at 7-8 steps and she just jumped and stood there not knowing what happened. Had similar experiences on 2 different buck under 20 steps. Those 3 fell over within sight once they took off.

Shoulder shots not always, but usually anchored them, often busting both shoulders even at near point blank range, My wife and I killed a bunch of them through the 90's with that combo. Excellent budget bullet with repeatable results for that application, but I got tired of the the meat loss that comes with intentionally going for a shoulder shot.

The pointed corelokts expand ok but not like the 200gr round nose in a 35 REM. LOL Dan.

I was hoping to test that exact theory out this past yr, but the opportunity to do so didn't work out.

We always used the 130 Grand Slams. I've shot them from 15 yards and out, and no blood shot to speak of. Even a Texas heart shot didn't ruin much.

I have been a fan of the 130 gr Partition out of my 270's for nearly 50 years. In the early days, on many shoe string budget hunts, using a Partition was my sole extravagance, and I didn't know any better. Jack O'Connor never gave me any bad advice.
Over the last decade, my grandsons & I have taken several whitetails with the 130 gr ETip, with total satisfaction. Trialed them, and was shocked at the stellar accuracy out of several rifles. Generally they shoot very near to the same poa as Partitions
Was again happily surprised by the significant reduction in bloodshot meat. Quite literally, you can "eat right up to the hole", while Partitions can rough up nearly a entire quarter. Over 10 or 11 whitetails, we have yet to notice any difference in quickness of the kill. The Etip and Partition have both proven to be reliable and effective.

Thanks fishdog. I have always used Barnes monos, but I hear good things about he E-tip. I'm surprised you had such bloodshot meat with the Partitions. I shot a Georgia whitetail at 15yds with a 7mm Rem Mag going 3200, tight behind the shoulder. He ran and dropped at 50yds. No real bloodshot, but I only hit ribs. Lungs were soup. I have some 130 partitions but haven't shot them yet. I have both 130 and 110TTSX to try too.

Do not over look the Remington 150 grain round nose for close in woods work. Just do not load to max velocities. The 140-150 grain PT's are perfect for modest velocities with their soft noses.

I've never seen any Remington 150 round nose components around here, not saying they don't/didn't exist. I know that the old guys ( older than me and I'm freshly turned 66) almost always use the 150 round nose factory loads in their .270s. That S$B 150 factory load looks good for the woods. Its a big fat round nose going about 2650fps ( probably slower ina 22" barrel). I'm going to shoot a box later on and see just how accurate they are and how close they will shoot to my "gee-wiz" Barnes loads. :)

Didn’t read all these but I have experienced how devastating a .270 can be as my dad hunted with one for years with 130gr Remington Core-Lokt.

My buddy loads down for his wife’s M77 Ruger, I believe it’s a Barnes TTSX 130gr. I helped dress a cow elk that she took a couple of years ago, about a 50 yard shot in the spine. Little to no blood shot or bone shrapnel. They have used this bullet successfully on several other elk as well. I would recommend trying it.

I think the 150gr Rem CoreLokts are just the bullet your looking for in a <200 yard "woods shot".
I've used them and so have many friends for this very reason.

At least you should try a box before you commit time and money reloading.

I saw those earlier. I wonder who made them?

I’d bet they were made by Speer, but honestly no idea. I’d think they were special runs made for Federal.
