Deer season is a memory and the ice is just starting to get good for fishing as cold temps and snow have now covered the mid west region. Perfect time to get out and do some predator hunting.
I went out late afternoon to my favorite bluff to see if I could call in a coyote. Due to time constraints, I opted for my trusty mouth call.
I started a series of distress rabit calls followed by a few minutes of silence. The only thing I saw was a fine snow falling. I started a second calling sequence and again sat in complete silence for about 4-5 minutes when I saw a coyote come in from the thick stuff.
I quickly got the M700 Classic 257 Roberts into position as the coyote stopped behind a Russian Olive. I waited it out and it started to make another loop in front of me looking for the distressed rabbit. At about 75 yds, I kissed a couple times to stop the song dog. The duplex reticle in the Leupold VXII 3-9x40mm set at 4X settled behind the shoulder and I sent a 110 gr AB on its way. The coyote stumbled at the shot and collected itself to make a 30 yd death dash before pilling up. I saw the familar tail spin and knew that it was dead. A beautiful female with a prime coat weighing about 25 lbs.
The bullet entered the ribs on the left side and exited the offside a couple inches behind the righgt shoulder leaving a hole the size of a quarter.
