Minnesota bear hunting outfitters

I know the Minnesota DNR has a list of all the licensed bear guides in the state on their website. The no quota area is primarily made up of private land. I once looked into hunting it near the St.Croix State Forrest. It seemed very crowded with other bear hunters so I gave up on the idea. I hunt a lottery unit and used to draw every year up until 4 years ago when they greatly reduced the number of permits available. Now it can take 3 or more years of preference points to draw a tag.

Wisconsin has many hound guides. Some can be found on Craigslist. It can take 8 years or more to draw in Wis. Happy hunting!

Thanks for the info. I didn't realize that it took that long to draw for Wisconsin. We used to run the crap out of them in upstate NY. But you couldn't shoot over the dogs. It is a rush. At least there we didn't have wolves killing our dogs.
I do have one prospect for the no quota area in MN. I will post the info that I get from them.

WI did increase the number of tags in the past years and the number of years to draw has decreased. I should get a tag with 6 years of points in a zone where you can bait and run hounds.

I don't know if you are wanting the thrill of the chase or not but I am sure that there are groups of guys that would let you tag a long during training season to watch the hounds and be in the action. If that is something that interests you, I am guessing you could contact a guide or two and ask if you could participate in training.

I've been on plenty of chases with hounds and that's a thrill in its self. We treed the same old boar three times one day before he got pissed and deceided not to climb anymore. We would pull the hounds back and start pounding the base of the tree till he started to come down. When bark started hitting you, you knew it was time to vacate. As soon as his feet hit the earth we would break the leashes and the chase would be on again.
Now it looks like if I want to use hounds I'll just go to Maine.
Now I just want to put one on the ground. Plus I'm tired of having nice rifles and only being able to hunt with a shotgun slug only area.

Keep the input coming. I like huntin talk.

We tapped a bear out of a tree one time and when it came down, my mom was with and about .... her pants. Instead of run, he just stood there and looked at us. She was shaking so bad. I still pick on her about it. I miss those days of running all night long seeing bears and chasing hounds then trying to make it to work on time only to do it again and again all week long. I enjoyed the walking bears and sneaking into the bayed up dogs doing what they loved to do.

Did you guys run off baits or have rig dogs ride on the dog box that would open up when they smelled a bear? We mostly ran off baits but did have one good rig dog that would open up when he smelled one while driving down the road.

We mostly ran off baits. But if the dogs said a bear was around we let them go. We had 2200 acres around the Moose River with friends that had many more. It was paradise. Only lost two dogs in 5 years. 1 stick in the neck and one hit by a car. Dam I miss those people, that place and the sound of the hounds.
I'll try to scan some of the pics of the pups and the bears.

We had a buddy that they called "bear killing Jay" he got clawed up pretty good one time. Story was that he had a big one bayed up and it was wanting to give a couple pups a bear hug. So he got between the bear and the pup to save it. So the bear smacked him good. Truth is. Dogs were running the bear past Jay and he threw a rock and hit the bear. Bear stopped so fast that the dogs ran up its rear end. Mr. Bear did a about face and walked right over and smacked him a good one.
I wasn't there but his dad let the cat/bear out of the bag.

Another good one was seeing one of our blue ticks make it 20 feet up the tree cause she wouldn't let go of the bears ass. And the red bone that we lost and picked up 40 road miles from where we let him go. Poor suckers feet were so swollen that he couldn't walk for three days.
Funniest one was trying to put my Weim in the box with a couple other hounds. She wasn't having it.

Great stories fellas!

I took my first bear over hounds in Maine as a young kid. I'm really gunning to get after lions but I'd do bear again in a heartbeat.

I would use my first born as bait to go after lion. Don't worry he's fast..., really fast

I had a girlfriend with a baby that cried a lot.
Used to use him as coyote bait until she found out what I was doing and ran away. I miss the little sucker. :)

I did not own dogs, I just ran with a great group. If I draw a WI bobcat tag, I will be contacting them. I think I will draw in a few years.

We also used these hounds to run coyotes in the winter. We lost 2 great dogs in 4 years. One to a train and one fell into an partially frozen creek and went under the ice. Both were on the trail of a coyote.

Other than the hunting, I miss the campfires, grilled chicken and fresh corn on the cob.

One other bear story was when we tapped a bear down and my buddy went to slap it with his leash but when he swung his hand, he hit it with his hand because he was so close. I witnessed it so I know it is true. We didn't tap a lot of bears out of the trees because we have so many here and we would only run one bear per night on weeknights. If it was 5 minute run, we just had more time to sit and talk by the fire.
