Yes, that is a problem, Gene. Surely there's another angle for pushing the lad toward a new sanity!

Agreed. I can't imagine the Poor Colonel sitting in his safe now. Knowing he sits on a Remington action surrounded by the hoards of Winchesters and seeing another .358 bored rifle. It must truly be troubling. Wondering if he'll ever get out again. Poor Fella!!

Very nice! Seems like a stellar rifle and in a very interesting caliber. Maybe you will have to retire the Remington now and use the Winchester

Scotty that is so cool :) to have friends & family like that is a true blessing my friend. I am so happy for you Bud.
I can't wait for your range reports with photos of course .

Blessings,
Dan

Scotty,

now that is just way too cool buddy.
Congratulations to you and your bride and great friends!
Nicely done Brian!!!

What Scotty should do is now have an M70 donor made to Whelen specs for a little brother to the Newton. Then the good ol' Whelen might get some play time again. :)

My M70 Whelen is a very nice addition to my M70 lineup. I can't imagine Scotty would long be able to resist having one like it.

I second that. A Model 70 Whelen, and its big brother the Model 70 35 Newton. Perfect pair there Top.

Yeah, I don't see my Whelen going anywhere. It's been an excellent hunting rifle and everytime I've tried to get rid of it, I couldn't. It's an unreal shooter and a good carrying rifle too. I imagine my son may get some blood on it in the future. Plus, I don't feel too bad about that particular Remington, I read a lot of Bob Milek as a kid and him and his M700 Whelen did a lot to shape my thoughts.

Thank you all for the well wishes. I'm a very lucky guy. Great friends and family. Doesn't get much better.

It is a fine caliber, the Newton, built back when men were men and boys did not own .35 Newton's! I still have my 9.3x74R to keep me in the club of mature cartridges for mature men. With (me and DrMike) we old fools as charter members.

I guess my membership will have to wait....largest bottlenecked round I can boast is the Whelen. The 375 H&H will come home to roost some day, but that's a ways off yet.

Hey, we old codgers have to stick together. We can't walk as fast or as far as we once did, so we need to hit hard and make certain what we hit stays down! Headed out to harass moose and deer this morning. Yup, I'll make certain to carry enough gun. Now, Scotty, were the 35 Newton up here with me, I could give it a good work out. Man, loaded with 280 grain A-Frames, it would be fearsome.

HA! I would love to give those big Swift's a try Mike. I would imagine there isn't much of anything that isn't going to get a through and through with one of them. Seems like they can get moved out pretty quick too..

I do believe they would give quite a thump, Scotty. The big Woodleighs should provide quite an interesting impact, as well. That Newton should have enough case capacity to stuff a bit of powder behind this big bullets.

I am thinking so Mike. I am staring at it (the 35 Newton) sitting in the corner. Not sure what to do with it just yet. Cases are all prepped. Need to figure out a scope for it. I am thinking if I leave it unscoped for a little bit, it will keep me from being distracted with an elk hunt coming up. It is HARD to not mess with it though. I have ALOT of bullets for it, just sitting on my shelf!

I even have a handful of 310 grain Woodleighs...

Three tens? Yeah, that would be a lot of mass to put on game. It would push through about anything. On the other hand, the 250 grain Partitions will have quite an impact on game from that cartridge. It will do a good job on about anything.

A rifle like that in a big game caliber is just dieing for a VXIII 1.5-5 or a straight 6x. I have a new to me 2-10 Minox coming that would be a great combo with all the eye relief you could ask for. Heck I would probably just load one and take it to the range just to pull the trigger with out a scope, just to feel it go bang.

That's great brother! Good things happen to good people. You have some fine family and friends. Can't wait to see it all set up and slinging bullets.

Thanks fellas. Yeah, it should sling some bullets, heavy ones pretty well.

The reason I am holding off on buying some rings and mounts is I am not sure if it'll get 1" or 30mm scope. The 1.5x5 Leupold would be a nice one. That's sorta the problem, there are alot of great options.

Scotty,

The 250 gr PT at 3000 fps would be just the ticket for elk!
Maybe you should throw on a scope, work up a quick load with the 250 gr PT and take it on your upcoming elk hunt!
It just might come together quicker than you think. :)
