Any experience with this? I found a 264 win mag crf model 70 with a boss. I had a Boss on my very first rifle a 7mag A bolt. If you tinkered with it enough it would make any bullet combination a shooter. This was before I did any reloading so wouldn't know how it would affect it. I think they wanted around 800, fair price??

If it is in good condition, that seems to be a fair price, primarily because of the desirability of the chambering. If used, it seems high, except for the chambering. The BOSS system works, without question. I never owned a rifle with the BOSS, but I hunted with a few friends that had Brownings with the BOSS. For sure, the 264 WM is a great cartridge; and chambered in the Winchester Model 70, it is truly a piece of rifle history.

Maybe a bit high for used, but I guess it depends how bad you want a 264 w/boss. Not many of them around. Me personally, I'd jump on it if it was in good condition and fairly low round count.

Same here. I know some really hated the BOSS, but like some others, I have a 338WM M70 Classic Stainless with the BOSS and it flat out will shoot anything! I like mine alot and have no plans of changing it to anything else. It is easy to tune and with accurate reloading on top of it will produce some unreal accuracy.

Well, the 264WM, I can't help you there, I just got my first one and I LOVE IT! I would say get it. I can't see you not liking it, if you like flat shooting, high BC'ed, high SD'ed bullets going pretty darned fast! Scotty

I know a guy who bought a Model 70 Classic BOSS stainless in .30-06 (I am considering referring to this round only as the .300 Whelen henceforth), and his seems to shoot any handload very well. I have one in .25-06, and my first time out I thought the magic had fallen in my lap but further trials proved otherwise. I think it can be extremely trying to find the right setting for the BOSS when there is no guidance at all, and what guidance there is can be very difficult to find. I DID find it, and I will share it here:

...and now as I look over what I copy-n-pasted here, I don't see anything for the .264 Win Mag. Hope you have the literature that came with the rifle!

I will not own any 264 win mag without a 26" tube.

Hardheaded I guess.

I agree with you POP. With 24" you use too much powder to get 6.5X55 to 6.5-06 performance. I have 27 3/4" tube on my 264 Win mag. That is all that could be gotten from a 28" blank.

Obviously people can put whatever length barrel on their 264's I wanted 24" with mine for better handling since it is used for mountain hunting but I have never seen a 6.5x55 that with a 130 gr bullet will do 3200 fps safely  Probably could get more speed with my 264 but gave up hotrodding long ago

Kinda the way I feel when I bought mine. It has a 24" bbl as well, but I WILL burn it out within a few years, so then I can put a 28" on it and get all the performance I need out of it, but for now, the 24" will still do me out to 1K.

A 24" vs 26" is 80-100fps worth of difference, which in all reality extends your maximum range about 25 yards, which isn't really worth writing home about.

A 140g at 3100 or 120g at 3300 is still gonna wack the snot outta deer for a loooooooong ways.

Have a hard time getting a 6.5-06 up to 264 speeds, even with a 24" bbl on the 264, let alone a swede? Really? Come on man...

 I just love jerking the 24" verses 26" chain.

I do have a M-96 Mauser 6.5X55 with the original 29" barrel that I get 3000 fps with 120 BTs with safe for this action loads according to Accurate Arms ballistics person with AA 4350. Been shooting it for years. It does take A LOT more powder to get that out of my 264 Win mag but then again I can get over 3600 fps with the same bullet in it with Retumbo.

I have a buddy that has a 6.5-06 26" tube that is getting 3150 fps with 130 ABs using Hybrid 100V.

I will say that most people don't shoot game far enough away to see any difference in the velocity between a 24" and a 26" barrel in a 264 Win mag.

Yeah, I doubt that I will ever test the true capabilities of mine, but it is fun to have and shoot! I figure if I am shooting at 500 yards, that is a long shot! Scotty

I went back and talked them down to $650 but I still couldn't pull the trigger.

It had a black extractor but the face looked like it had been machined with a new contour. I was wondering if it was so they could close the rifle on a round instead of having to feed them up from the magazine??? Anybody have one with the black extractor that could tell me about it? Bore and throat looked very good, bolt was pretty smooth. The trigger wasn't great but could probably be improved.

I probably should have had them put it on hold atleast, but I need to get my fn Model 70 stainless fthwt .270 out of layaway first next weekend.

To add insult to injury I saw a beautiful Sako L579 in .243 that was super nice.

My 264 has the black extractor. Not sure what difference there is. My 338 has the stainless one, and I will have to look and see what my 270WSM has? None of them will take a cartridge directly into the chamber without imposing ALOT (too much) force.

650 sounds reasonable for the rifle. Good luck. Scotty

I have two M70 "classics" and both have black extractors. I can stick a cartridge in the chamber and close the bolt without problem. The extractors are beveled and spring around the rim easily.

I'm thinking that the north carolina models have the stainless extractor and the new haven models have the black ones....... however I'm usually wrong about pretty much everything!
