Model70 makeover

[STW]

After 21 years with my model 70 stainless in STW I've decided its time for a re-barrell.
Going to get a 24 inch stainless, fluted ,chamber it in 300 Win Mag with as close to the factory contour as possible. Also getting shop to replace factory trigger with a Timney.
For now I will keep factory stock as it has been bedded with Devcon and shoots very well.
I picked up some Talley lightweight low mounts which I will get the shop to lap.
I picked up a 3.5-15 x50 NF NSX as it will work well with my rangefinder.
I will have to talk to gunsmith again to see his thoughts on drilling and tapping receiver holes to accept larger screws than the factory size. Anybody with thoughts on this?
Corlanes in British Columbia will be handling all of the work. I'm shipping it off tomorrow.
My son killed his whitetail at our farm Friday evening with it the last animal to get the STW.
He thinks I should leave it alone , too late.

The boys in the shop will do a good job for you. Nothing wrong with a 300 Win Mag; classic cartridge, for sure.

Most of the custom barrel makers will turn a factory contour for you. Nice then - because it will fit your existing stock well.

The .300 Win mag is a great cartridge - not sure it will do anything for you that your 7mm STW didn't already have covered - but it's nice to be able to find ammo about anywhere, and the .300 Win mag sure is popular! I've owned three or four of them over the years.

I never bothered having a barrel fluted... Saw little advantage - but if you like 'em that way, go for it!

Ya - drilling out the screw holes for bigger screws is something a lot of the precision rifle guys have done - to use bigger stronger screws for those big, heavy scopes & mounts.

The .300WM is a very popular and well balanced cartridge. Ammo is fairly easy to find, if you need factory loads, and it will take-on most big-game animals with-out working up a sweat.

Sounds like a good plan. Going to 8-40 certainly wouldn't hurt with the heavier scope your planning to use

STW, I think you will be very happy with the work that Corlane's does they are great smiths and really good men as well.
I would personally go with a 26" barrel but that is just me. I was wondering what rate of twist you have asked the barrel to come in.
As far as screws for your mounts I would go with 8-40s as there is extra strength there and the Timney trigger is top shelf in my books, are you getting them to true up the action as well?
Can't wait until you get her back and the range report with photos arrives .
I have a friend that shoots a 300win in a Sendero and it sure delivers, he shoots 180gr. ABs out of it and I believe he uses IMR4350 with them.

Hi Sask boy, I forgot to mention it will be a 1 in 10 twist .Also the smith I spoke to on the phone suggested blueprinting the action. I think he said his name was Greg. I will also be following his recommendation with this. I'm going to this cartridge for a couple reasons the first is it seem much easier to locate 300 WM brass and the other is I'm hoping it will shoot ballistic tips and accubonds as well as my RUM does then I can just buy lots of one bullet. The Nosler 7 manual shows one should be able to get close to 3100 fps with a 180 grain bullet using a 24 '' barrel. Good enough for me just hope it shoots. My bro in law had a model 70 winlite a few years back and it also wore a 24 '' barrel in 300 Win and shot well.
All I can do now is sit back and wait for my (sons) rifle and spring to arrive so one can get out to the range again.

Greg heads the rifle building team (Rod is the owner). Greg is top flight--a world-class smith, one of the best you can find in North America. He will do you a good job. His recommendation is always worth considering.

Yes 24" barrel will be more than efficient for the job you want it to do.
Do you know which barrel manufacturer they are going to order from?

Hi Sask boy, the gunsmith told me they have access to a number of quality barrel makers and he mentioned a few to me. I do not have my heart set on any one brand so I'll follow his recommendations.
I wish I had a round count on that rechambered factory barrel its wearing. The throat looks smooth for a fair ways but the thing won't quit shooting. I'm going to be conservative and say 2000 rounds in 21 years.

hello STW...I've owned a few STWs, nice rounds, but like the RUMS now, brass/ammo is a pain to find! In 300WM Remington Mod 700 and Winchester 70 24" barrels, we easily got 3100fps with the older Barnes 180XBT and 76gr R22. It was a real killer round on African plains game, from big Kudu, zebra, Impala, Blesbuck, hartebeest, blue wildebeest, warthogs in South Africa to Gemsbuck ( the big ones) and springbuck in Namibia...just an awesome round. I never used one on elk, but did on antelope and mule deer here in Utah and slaughtered whitetails in Texas with one ( I used Federal factory ammo with the 150 Pro Hunter which acted just like Partitions! Go figure?) I personally like Medium height rings, but hey, whatever works for you or youre used to is just fine with me, ha. Good luck to you

Lots of good barrels out there if you are flexible and use one they have in stock the gun will be put together that much quicker. It will still be a long wait but just not as long. Getting it going now is a good idea so you have time in the summer to work up loads.

Currently I have a New Haver M70 Stainless Classic in .338 Win. Mag. I replaced the garbage Tupperware stock with a McMillan I had on hond and regardless of the stock it literally beat me to death. Had my gunsmith put a Pachmeyr Decelerator pad and muzzle brake on it and while a little better still beats the unholy bejabbers out of me. Have decided to chain him back to his work bench and reburial it to a 7MM Rem. Mag. and glass bed the action and first two inches of barrel and do a proper trigger job on the gun. Gun has a 26" barrel and the brake makes it full 28.5" The stock has the lines of the M70 FWT. All in all one cool but mean looking rifle. Mean on both ends as well. :roll: Normally I'm not all that recoil shy but arthritis in my shoulder had gotten somewhat worse so I'm backing off on the loudenboomerkickinharder guns I own. Guess I'm just getting too old the enjoy getting the snot kicked out of me. :roll: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

Yeah tell me about it. It's the main reason I got rid of my 300Wby and got a 7RM M70.

Yup I am with you guys one of the main reasons I got rid of my 375 Hurt&Hurt :wink:. My custom in the 35 Whelen you can shoot all day but that has a limbsaver & a McMillan stock on it. I really enjoy shooting my 280AI as well .
