I bought some Nosler 3006 cases .
Some of the case mouths are going to have to be straighten up.

I measured the shoulder on the Nosler
and Remington's ( once fired case )
they both are 2.042 " .
I wonder why the Rem. didn't stretch ?
They are both at 2.484 in length .

What do you guys think about the Remington case for reload since it is still the same length ?
I have some new Winchester brass ,
the Win.and the Nos. have the same thickness of .018 " ( just wanted to throw that in ) .

I also measured the OAL of my lands to bolt face with my 150 gr. NAB.
Nosler tested coal is 3.320 , so this gives me a .050 " jump !

Very interesting !

Most 3006 cases I've worked with start at 2.038 on my hornady hs checker. And by just a coincidence...wind up around 2.042 in my tikka.

Was the Remington brass already resized after firing when you measured it?

No it wasn't resized , I kept them after sighting in with sciroccos .

I don't have a press yet, but I pretty much have everything else to begin reloading.
I'm buying little by little asking questions along the way to influence my decisions and I thank everyone on this forum who has been helpin' out !

I have read a case will stretch when it's fired and springs back a little and by measuring, I can't tell the difference between new brass and once fired brass.
I have new brass by Nosler and Winchester , so if decide to reload the Rem. cases , should I neck size only or FL size it since there's no change in
size ?

Well, there's no real easy answer Ray.

What you're going to discover is that once you run that brass through a FL sizer die, it will be longer than it is now. My point is that comparing the lengths of fired brass to unfired brass is kind of meaningless.

Brass that fits your chamber well to begin with won't change in dimensions much at all when fired. In fact, a generality that might be good to keep in mind is that the less diameter is affected by any single process, the less length will be affected. That holds true for firing and resizing, both. The less the dimensions are affected by these processes the better, because it enhances longevity.

Neck sizing only might be an option, but if I was you I'd just stick with conventional FL sizing for a while. Enthusiasm is great, but trying to learn everything all at once is more likely to confuse you than help.

Thanks , I have a much better understanding now !

I'm not a fan of Remington cases but that just me. I found I got better accuracy with Nosler and Winchester brass. Case dimensions will vary a bit and that effects burn time of the powder and pressure. Pressure is also effected by how work hardened the brass is. Also, if you neck size you will need to eventually full length resize. Usually every three or four firings.
FYI.

I avoid Remington if possible. Works fine on my Whelen but I've had better results with Winchester, Norma, Nosler and Lapua. Even Hornady seems real decent these days as well.
