The desert assuredly has its own beauty. You've captured some of the charm, Bill. Thanks for sharing.

I really enjoyed our time there, the weather was perfect, actually cool for the season. We had 43 degrees one morning and I think the highest temp was 85. The hiking was great the only downside was cleaning out the sand after.

My times in desert conditions have given me an appreciation of the beauty of that harsh environment. I can't say that my wife is as enamoured as I have been.

I lived in the Nevada desert for about 11 years and down here in Arizona for almost 35 years now. I even did one hunt years back in the Superstition Mountains. That one did get wierd. Lone DIY hunt, camped next to a windmill that clanked all night long. Woke me up about 3 in the morning and it sounde like there was someone outside my tent walking around and around.
When I got up I saw where somene hd walked around the tent. I ran into a Game Warden a bit later and told hi about it and he said there was a "gang" of hippie types living illegally in the wilderness area and they were suspected of robbing camps to get supplies. I've never hunted up there since. Dunno how anyone could get lost up there as I never had any problems getting around. It is a some rugged country though.
When I was a young man, I used to hunt the rain forests of Northwester California. When I ended up living in ester country it was a whole new ball game for me. I especially liked the High desert in the great Basin but now do my thing down here in AZ. A few years back, quite a few in fact I was invited to do a hunt up on the Olympic Penninsula. Real tight close in cover type hunting just like I used to so many years ago. Talk about paranoid. I actually go lost twice. I'd forgotten how to get around in that type of terrain. :( Just glad I had my compass and was able to figure my way out. Me? I think I'll just stick to being a desert rat.

Good photos! I like the desert.

When stationed down in Southern California, we'd train out at 29 Palms quite often. I enjoyed that.

Also used to take my family out hiking and camping in the desert, at Joshua Tree. Good memories. One time I was camping with my oldest son, he was about five years old. I sacked out on the ground, but he wanted to sleep on top of the truck, on a luggage rack I'd built for it. It had "walls" to keep him from falling out so I thought, "Why not?" and tucked him into his bag on top of the truck.

About the time I snuggled down into my bag his little 5-year old voice said "I hope the coyotes and mountain lions don't eat you while you're sleeping down there in the dirt Dad."

Thanks a lot kid... Just what I needed to hear for a good night's sleep in the desert!

It was a good campout. Lots of good memories.

Thanks, Guy

Nothing like having your child looking out for you, Guy.

Elkman,

Nice pics and it's nice to see them.

I spent some time in and around JTree in my younger days. Took the wife there last year on the way to Big Bear to show her around a little. I hadn't been there in about fifteen years. Lots of old memories came flooding back when I was there. It really is a nice place and the desert has it's beauty.

Shake your boots for scorpions in the morning. I went out to 29 Palms in the Army and we had a good time but do shake your boots and watch out for rattlesnakes.

Ingrained habit for me being a desert rat.

I learned that in Vietnam, it is also an ingrained habit. I still do it when I am camping in a tent, in warm weather.

Beautiful country we don't have anything quite like that here in Saskatchewan :(
Maybe some day I will get to visit that country.

Blessings,
Dan

Very nice Bill.

29 Palm's is certainly some nice country. I am sure it is much nicer to look at, at your pace though, than everytime I have been ran through there though.

I used to shoot out in Palm Desert when stationed on Camp Pendleton. It was the only place you could really get out and stretch the legs on the 300 Magnum a bit. Once in awhile I could scam it on our sniper bay at R130, but Palm Desert was a good place to shoot. Not a whole lot there then. Not sure about now, since I left Ca in 2006..

Our friends are retired AF, so we toured the semi-public part of the base with them. Its in the desert and could be hot no doubt but many of the facilities are new. Housing is much better than in the 60's and many of the stores were like being down town. Lots of young polite marines there also, we ate lunch at the O club and it was very good quality. Our friend said that the Pizza Hut there was one of the highest grossing in the chain. Lots of armor, lots of equipment a great morning.

That's cool Bill. Glad you got to saw some young, polite Marines!

All kidding aside, sounds like a great day out there.
