I finished up most of the machining on my .284win. so I thought I'd post some pictures of the breech end of things. The picture prior to threading didn't turn out but I got the rest to work.

Now you're talking. The older I get, the more I appreciate lighter calibres. I'm turning into a wuss when it comes to pulling the trigger on these big rifles.

My buddy talked me into do a .284 instead of a 7-300wm. In reality when your dialing it doesn't matter that much since the .284 has enough punch for the potential distance I will shoot with this rifle.

That's awesome I need to get a lathe mill and CNC!! Looks good so far Nathan. What are the specs on that?

Actually, a 7-300WM could be an interesting rifle as well. Ballistics would approximate the 7RM, which isn't too shabby at all.

It's a McGowen #5 8" twist. It was suppose to go in a Greybull stock that I bought a month ago used and still don't have. It will sport a 4.5x14 leupie.

Mike,

A 7-300wm splits the difference between a 7rm and a 7stw but is a bit closer to a STW.

Nathan,

The 284 Win is a cool round. Are you building in on a long action?

Jim,

Yeah this one is. I have 2 others on short actions. This one is throated for 168's so I will most likely shoot 162 Amax's or 168 Bergers. It's primarily for packing in deer hunting. Since our deer herd are in pretty rough shape it's requiring a lot more hiking to find a decent buck. So if I don't draw a good hunt then I'm packing in somewhere like in my young and dumb youth. It just takes longer to get there now :). I might even rethink the Greybull stock and go with one of the High Tech stocks I have to get it even lighter.

That's the cool part about doing a custom you can build it as you see fit. I had mine custom throated for the 160AB so I'm set in the neck at 3.45" vs the standard 3.34"

nice i like it. was wondering if you ever did a 30-284? i have been looking at that pretty hard lately.

I re-chambered a factory .308 barrel years ago to a .30-284 but my good buddy did one not too long ago on a Krieger and it was really accurate.

Nathan, awesome build. Some of the older cartridges are really pretty cool. That 284 will be pretty cool I think.. Starting to get back into the 7mm's a little more and am beginning to wonder why I ever got away from them to be honest! They do so much stuff well..

Sounds like you are going to have a good deer season. I enjoy doing a little packing. Makes the meat taste better!

Well I'm not particularly fond of deer meat so I mostly hunt for the horns and typically give the meat away or make a lot jerky out of it. Big deer horns are worth packing in somewhere to me. My theory is elk and moose (when I can) are to fill the freezer and deer horns are to hang on the wall. I've shot a few big bulls and don't really get a charge out of it like I do when I see a big mulie. Bow hunting in the rut is about the only time elk hunting gets really exciting. I know that is the opposite of a lot people but I guess I like hunting high in wide open sage brush country more.

Sounds like your 284Win, built for the 160AB, is just the tool required for your passion.

Nice work. Nothing like the clean look of well worked steel.

Very cool. I can't wait to be able to do that! I've started my machine schooling, and so far all we have been doing is math and blueprint reading. It's hard to sit in a desk all day when I can hear machines running downstairs!

Nathan,

The 284 Win really intrigues me. The case design was way ahead of its time.
What kind of velocity can you get with the 162 gr Amax?

JD338

Jim,

Typically you get in the 2900's for velocity. My buddy has a 30" barrel on his and get's around 3025fps. This one is 26". Trajectory wise it's about like a .300wm shooting 210VLD's just with 20-25% less energy.

That 162 Amax is a fun bullet to shoot at targets and really gives a low cost alternative to shooting 160 AB's. I did just a touch of work with them before I left, and was getting 3075 out of them with the 7WSM and accuracy seems like it is going to be excellent. Wished I had some more time to stretch them out, but I will get it done in a few months I think.

That 284 is a real sleeper. I think Jake M's brother built one on a Savage and by all I can tell, it is a great performer. Hard not to like the 7mm's.

Nathan,

That is 280 AI territory. Pretty impressive performance to say the least.
