"My next rifle will probably not be a Whelen though. I'm sure they are great though."

Once you go Whelen, you will never go back.

I can understand that.... Most people enjoy hunting so much that hunting with a Whelen takes the fun right out of it.. Darned animals just lay right down when they know there is a Whelen in the woods!

The mere thought of a Whelen in the woods is sufficient for most animals to just drop and wait for the end. Only occasionally does the one carrying a Whelen have to pull the trigger.

Yes, when I first came to the forum, my goal was to learn about the 6.5 X 284 & then have one built. Then I heard all the accolades on the 35 Whelen I was drawn in . Now I have had a second custom made and it is the 280AI. I guess my mind is easily swayed but that is okay I consider the people here to have way more knowledge than this flatlander so far I have not been steered wrong .

Blessings,
Dan

I can't remember what I first came here for, but it has been taxing on my wallet the whole time..

I can't remember if I had my Whelen before or after I joined this place, but it has been the one rifle along with my 270WSM that remain staples of the safe. They don't get used as much anymore, but should..

It is all too easy to get very enthusiastic about some new rifle, and in a few years have amassed quite a collection of "deer & elk rifles." Even though we may only go deer or elk hunting a few days every year...

It's debatable, I'd have probably been better off just sticking with my tried & true rifles, only two or three including the .22 Marlin, a 6mm varmint/predator rifle and a .30-06 deer/elk rifle... But... I sure learned a lot by working with all the others!

Guy made a great point, I think I had a 300 Win Mag, 270WSM, 7mm Rem Mag, 22 Magnum, a couple of shotguns back when I started around here (still can't remember when I got the Whelen, but I think in the early Fall of 05)..

Now, well, yeah, I have outgrown my safe, wife's patience and probably a few other things as well!

Yeah when one gets down to it a .22, a 12 gauge, a 45 pistol, and a 30-06 rifle really cover anything in the realm of "what I NEED."

But...there are many good and fun things that reside outside the realm of a need. Still I find all of my rifles and the cartridges they shoot are utilitarian in nature to keep me trying new things with them. It also keeps me from repeating the "buy, load, shoot, sell" cycle with those rifles I am yet to grow too fond of.

Obsession?...yes!

Bad thing? Not on your life!

Yep...been there, done that...wised up last year though...sold them all but a few...kept almost exactly what you mentioned above....243, 30-06, 22...and two AR15's (not spec'd for hunting in any shape or form)

I now have 2 safes I need to sell...
