Well my buddy Don finally scored on his mountain goat in the Cabinet Mountains wilderness. I sure wish I would have been with him on his hunt. They took some amazing pictures. He told me it was only about 1.5 miles from the trail-head to the lake where they were glassing from but that it switch-backed all the way up, and it was most definitely up!
Don used his Winchester Model 70 300 WSM that came with the factory laminate stock. He has a Zeiss Conquest scope on it. I loaded ammo for Don for almost 26 years now but he finally this year began loading his own. I had worked up a load for his 300 WSM with a 180 gr. AccuBond so all he had to do was load some more up to shoot. He told me he had to shoot his goat three times. I cannot blame him as you don't want those things falling off a cliff or ending up somewhere you cannot get to them. His billy was just over and under 9" and was aged at 7.5 years. Don figured he was about 200 pounds on the hoof which is about 100 pounds lighter than the billy he shot when I was with him 20 years ago. He was surprised at how much they can vary in size. Enjoy the pictures.
