My Moose Hunt Ended Abruptly

I do believe moose is my favourite wild game. I know a lot of my friends argue for elk, and I do enjoy elk. However, a two-year-old moose is excellent table fare.

Preparing wild game from the moment it is down is what it is all about.
Almost all of our animals are field dressed and cooling in a matter of minutes. Also when we skin the animal we spend a considerable amount of time getting the hide and its hair off all the meat and it is hanging within a hour or 2 in most cases.
When we were younger we have the meat butchered by who ever would take it now we go only to one guy who we know. This ensures that we get the same animals as we took in  also we do not get as many steaks cut now more roasts and still good quality lean sausage  why is the best stuff never good for you
However I do enjoy Elk over Moose but that is just me :)

Blessings,
Dan

Moose is definitely great eating all the ones my brother and I have gotten have been excellent. Young early season caribou or mountain goat ranks right up there when it comes to table fare.

I will concede the point, Gerry, with the proviso that emphasis is placed upon young and early season for the caribou. Mountain goat ... less certain about whether I'd agree, but sheep definitely would figure in on that one.

I had Mountain Goat, Sheep ribs, and elk ribs when I was in BC in 1995. I remember almost eating the bones it was so GOOD! I really love wild game meat. If I could pack in enough of it, we could really tone down the amount of meat we needed to buy per year. Although, I could buy a whole cow for the amount I spend on Noslers most of the time....

Ah well, it is therapy for me as well, and that isn't cheap!

We are blessed in my house as we still have Vension, Elk & Moose from last year. I will be giving it away once I get my Elk in anther month. This year I will likely get 2 Moose as my nephew does not eat a lot of wild game as they butcher a steer in the spring and fall every year so their deep freeze is almost always full.
I hear you Scotty about cost when you add up all the cost regarding hunting it likely is cheaper to purchase a steer & pig every year, but it is not about the cost or the animal as I have always said getting your game is the bonus. The hunting and fellowship is what it is all about for me

Congratulation on taking that young bull Mike.

Our season opens in exactly a month and two days from now. We bow hunt, which may not appeal to many folks on the board, but it’s the way to go here if we want to hunt during the prime rut season. There’s really nothing like taking a 1300lbs+ bull from 40 yards away!

Best of luck for the rest of the season for your other hunts.

Ben

We can hunt with pointy sticks during the rut (rifles are prohibited at that time). .You are correct that it can be pretty exciting.

Ben, I have never hunted them with a pointy stick but I have heard them calling when we have been rifle hunting and it is something that I can't describe to people. I believe that is something everyone should encounter once in their life.
I hope that everyone on the board has a great hunting season, it only a month away until I will be in full swing

Blessings,
Dan

Ben,

I am a bow hunter. I love that up close and personal experience.
I'm pretty sure 1300 lbs of rutting love sick bull at 40 yds would give me a good cardiovascular work out!

I just had a phone call this evening asking if I was up to going into the elk woods with a couple of native guides on September 1st. I'll be there. One of the fellows is a veteran guide of forty plus years. I am honoured.

I think you will have a good time Mike! What will you carry for elk! HA!

Good for you Mike :) it could not happen to a better guy. Please remember your camera and that new rifle. I think you better get it out to the range this week & put a few rounds through her!!
You are starting the season out with a flurry. I hope you can keep up the pace that you have set for yourself  you have set the bar pretty high for the rest of us to match!

Blessings,
Dan

Now, Dan, the bar isn't that high at all. I'm just fortunate to live where I do, and I know my situation is a real blessing. Jake, I will, if possible, carry the Brenneke. I'll see if I can get her shooting shortly.

well I am late chiming in but nice moose DR. Mike! man you guys are lucky to be out in the woods already. bow season and goose season is still 10 days away here. I am glad all that range time you have put in paid off, a miss at 8 yrds would be in excuseable. hahahaha.
