I take Sally everyday for a morning walk . somedays it's an hour other days it's 6 or so . last couple days I found things that might be of interest to you guys . yesterday we found our first scrapes of the season . this piece of two track was all scraped up last year . I'm going to say between 10 and 15 scrapes in this short distance . it was impressive to walk through there . we've been seeing a couple decent bucks within a couple hundred yards of this , so yesterday I thought to walk through this spot . I was surprised to see these two scrapes already . they say the young bucks get frisky before it's time to. I have not seen any rubs yet .
today while walking we came across a fresh kill .we had just walked past a fresh coyote scat probably 100 yards back . then we walked up on the entrails , and they were very fresh . I touched a blood spot and yes my finger was bloody . I'm thinking it's got to be nearly a newborn deer ,judging by the size of the entrails , still thinking a coyote kill . Sallys looking out a heavily used deer trail , I think it must have drug the fresh kill up that trail . now I'm thinking it's a bobcat kill and it's going to hide the kill in those ferns . so I go looking and really nothing looks disturbed enough to have something drug through . take a couple more steps and there's a dead porcupine . Sally wants no parts of that , she learned a couple years ago how this turns out . the only porcupine predator I know of , in PA , is the fisher . I'll guess we disturbed a fisher off the carcass . we were walking just about textbook perfect fisher habitat , the only thing missing is big evergreen trees . this is the first fisher kill I've seen .
