Why did no one actually develop a .257 WSM? I really would like one, with factory brass and everything.

I know we have the .25 Souper.. by why was it never standardized into a great hunting round? 25-08 or 257/08 sounds like an awesome round to me.

While on the subject. Why is there no true .338 WSM? Seems it would really be a great all purpose round.

If they serial # bullets, will they force the manufacturers to make their bullets hold together vs. explode and come apart, when hitting major bone?

Will a 165 gr. Ballistic Tip fly to same point of impact as a 165 gr. FMJ? (I think some testing is required)

In the Ford vs. Chevy debate will a Sako out shoot a Winchester? Will a Kimber out shoot a Tikka?

If I do inventory of my reloading supplies and I find I have 3 or 4 lbs. of powder I have never used in any load, am I required by the Reloaders Creed to use at least half of that powder to see what kind of loads I can work up in any and all calibers I may have?

Are Varmint Grenades still available?

its been done, and winchester toyed with it, but the 257 wsm was prone to pressure spikes which they never got worked out, so the idea was mothballed.
never really heard specifics of what they tried to correct the problem, personaly I'd want a 6.5 wsm myself.

With 08 cases already standardized with:
243 Winchester (.243/6mm)
260 Remington (.264/6.5mm)
7mm-08 (.284/7mm)

My guess is there just wasn't enough difference between them to warrant a .257. You're only looking at what? 7/100ths of an inch in bore diameter between the 260 and a .257?

As to the question around the lack of a 338 WSM, I think Nosler's #6 has some mention of it in their entry for the 325 WSM, but I could be mistaken. I think their testing just revealed better results with the 8mm. Sort of surprising, given that the options for .338 bullets are more plentiful.

I like your thought process. One(of many) I've thought about for 20 yrs. or more is why do they make rifles with 4 round magazines. Seems like a 2 round mag. would be plenty and rifles would be much thiner maybe even kinda racey lookin.

otter25, you and I must think alike. The other thought that used to cross my mind 15-20 years ago, was why can't you take a synthetic material and make a barrel, with a steel liner in it, to make it so much lighter, and dissipate heat so much faster.

This thought came to me in gunsmithing school, while lining a shot out .22 LR barrel.

Word around the campfire......all i can say is stay tuned. Winchester went into that hiatus that people forget about. Then when FN starting making Winchester rifles they had to perfect a select number of common calibers to re-introduce so to speak. Notice if you will that the number of calibers available now compared to when FN took over....more stuff is coming.

The nominal charge on a 257 wby is 65-75 grs......the nominal charge of a 257 wsm would be a little bit more than that...and for conversation sake lets say it is equal. That shorter fatter powder column would net more velocity but at what expense? We are talking little 25 cal bullets here...with a huge ignition behind hit.

On the 338 WSM round....the bullet starts getting too big for the short fat (WSM..cough cough...404 jeffrey) case to offer an advantage to the 338 or other calibers neighboring the 338. The 325 WSM was produced but it isn't a 338. Matter of fact the 300 will do everything the 325 does but even better as 30 cal bullets offered are a mile long. Plus it isn't enough IMO of a diameter gain.

I just like the idea of a short fat case, pushing a 120 gr. bullet out the barrel at about 3100 -3200 fps.... NOW, that said, I have a .257 ackley, that I built myself and I love it.

I'd want that in some sorts of easy to swap barrel platform. Shoot, take it off, chop 1/2 inch off, rechamber, go back at it. Start with a 30" tube and end up 10k later at 22"
