Here are the first pictures of my new 338-06 A-Square.
The specs are:
Ruger M77 Hawkeye
23" PacNor super match grade stainless barrel with factory contour
1:9 twist
Leupold 2.5-8x36 VX3
"Duke" engraved on the barrel (that was my dad's nickname - the only thing his family ever called him)

I'll post better photos as soon as we can get better weather here and I can get it out in the daylight. By the time I get home it is too dark to get good pics.
I just hope these attachments work. You can click the image to make them a little larger as well.

Nice!

What load(s) do you intend to work up?

Thank you, Mike & Jim! I love it so far. I just picked it up from UPS on Monday.

Jim - I plan to just start out with some of my 225 gr SST's to break in the barrel. I've got about 75-80 of them left over from when I had my 338WM. I play to try everything in it and just have some fun with it right now. As far as a hunting load....I'm hoping for a good 200gr AB or 210 PT load. Heck, I will probably just play around with some Hornady 250gr RN bullets too!

Very, very nice!

Dying for a range report here.

Who put it together?

I think I need something just like that! Well, except for a McSwirley instead of wood. And maybe a second one in .338-06 AI.

I like the scope choice... what reticle?

That should be a pretty hanndy little package! I really love the look of a stainless barrel with a blued action.

Pop - I sent my whole rifle to Pac-Nor and they did the barrel and mated it to my action. They also trued/squared the action as well. Trigger is still factory and I opted to keep the Ruger contour so that I wouldn't have to do any work on the stock. The rifle itself had never been fired when I sent it off to Pac-Nor. In fact, I'll probably put the unfired take-off barrel, a .270, up on Gunbroker or the campfire forums before too long. I'll probably get the trigger lightened and worked on after I get the barrel broke in. Pac-Nor actually included a bottle of Witches Brew with the instructions.

BK - the reticle is just the plain duplex. I almost went with the B&C on Scotty's recommendation but decided to keep it like every other scope I've owned.

Jake - thanks a lot! I was thinking of ceracoating it and the action for a solid matt black finish. Looking at it though, and after talking with Scotty B about it, I think I'll leave it as is but have it bead blasted. Pac-Nor put a superb high polish job on the barrel but it really glistens in the light.

What an awesome set-up you have. The scope, caliber, and barrel length all seem to be just perfect. That 338-06 is a real thumper. I cannot wait until you range test it so we can see what it does. One way to get some trigger use and help to get the pieces all melded together so when it comes time to adjust the trigger, there won't be any surprizes would be to purchase a couple A-Zoom snap caps and make sure you have one of those in the chamber and not a live round obviously and fire it on the cartridge a couple hundred times or more to help seat the trigger in. Dry firing is good practice anyway and with the A-Zoom's you know that it's easy on the firing pin and you just aren't dry firing it over and over again. Just a thought.

I like it, I like it a lot. Great job :!:

Pac-Nor does some excellent work, and this is a fine example of their craftsmanship. I will be most interested in your range work. The 338-06 is a favourite cartridge for one of my hunting partners.

Very nice looking rifle...craftmanship is hard to find anymore. This is my go-to caliber for moose and bear with the 210 PT. As alot of other on the forum have said, the Partition bullets shoot very small groups and do the job when they reach the target. Did you have a twist in the rifling for a specific bullet weight?

I went with a 1:9 twist and told them I'd like to be shooting 210 PT and 225 AB's. I figure I'll be able to load to max box length. I haven't measured my freebore yet with any bullets.

I hope to get to shoot it next weekend.

Scott, the rifle looks AWESOME! Man, PACNOR did a great job on it from the pictures. I hope it is a shooter for you! It certainly looks really well balanced and every part of a great handling rifle. I think you are going to really like the 338-06. There is so much great data out there for it, you can't go wrong. I imagine some 210gr PT's would do just about anything that needs doing. Scotty

Pac-nor did my 378 WBY back in 2000. Very very accurate but I made it too heavy.

Yeah Buddy that is an awesomely schweet rig for sure. And 257 nailed, you just dont see many purty rifles anymore, but that one is.. Then again, I have always thought the M77R is a Classic Riflemans rifle!!

Scott,

You are going to have to get some of the new Nosler 338-06 brass for your new rifle!

Sweet Rifle !!! I had my gunsmith build me a 338-06AI and use the same PacNor barrel in a #5 and fluted it so it weighs in like a factory Sako m75 Greywolf 338WM.

LOVE THE CALIBER and shoots 225gr Accubonds and TTSX's quite nicely.

BTW when did Nosler start making 338-06 Brass???

Brass offerings for 2011 include 338-06 A-Square.

I saw that Jim!!! I can't wait but a part of me fears the sticker shock when they release it. I may need to start saving up for some of it right now.
