I got this rifle a while back and had a recoil pad put on it as didn't have anything on the buttstock. I just can't get over the wood on this old JC Higgins rifle. I picked it up for $300 with an old Denver Redfield 2-7 power. Unfortunately the old Redfield had a screwed up reticle so I need to send it off to be repaired, but at least I had an old 2-7 Monarch that would barely fit the rings.

Surprisingly attractive wood. There is just something about wood and blued steel. Perhaps not the best to carry in inclement weather, but it is certainly attractive. Good find.

It's true DrMike That synthetic(plastic) is better than wood for weather related resistance, however how many million tons of game were killed before the advent of plastic stocks? There is very little that can be done to plastic to make it as pleasing to the eyes as wood.

Amen, I love blued/wood rifles and I have truly owned my share of both. The wood I have used through the years has never impacted a hunt of mine and I have been on a few really wet ones with my wood rifles.

Very nice looking rifle and price. Those old FN mausers were made right. It should prove to be a very accurate rifle for you as well!

Man, that is a great score. I need to start looking through my local pawn shops more often. That is a classic 30-06. Wished the rifle could talk. I bet it would have some good stories. Scotty

That's a Mauser action . Can you tell who made it? J.C.Higgins were made by Winchester and F.N. a lot of other manufactures Usually high quality rifles. It's a beauty for sure with a well figured stock. You have a fine rifle.
Congrats

Congrats

FN! Shot it this weekend, didn't group well with my load I had worked up for my Rem 700 I used to have with 200 grain NP. I hoped they would work to keep me from pulling the bullets, but no luck. I'll pull the bullets and go with some 180 grain or lighter, as I'm going to save the 200 grain bullets for my .300 H&H. Need to see if there is anyway to lighten the trigger as well, very heavy trigger, but no creep.

You will most likely have to buy a timney sporstman. The one made for the mauser 98 will work just the same for your FN. If you replace the trigger, check into getting a beuhler or dayton traister safety then you can put it on the right side of the cocking piece and it will clear the scope.

I figured I'd have to replace the trigger, but I was hoping to stone it and see if that helps. The safety where it is at doesn't bother me, but if I replace it I'll go with a M70 style safety or I'll put a different shroud on and put a Timmney on with the safety.

the timney sportsmans trigger is usualy about 50.00 or less at midway.
works great with the higgins and is a snap to install.
you will not need to change the safty, but you could still go with a model 70 type if you want, but that is a prety spendy option.
