I know that there are a lot of do-gooders stateside who might object to such a trophy, but I've never seen a mount and thought it'd make for a unique hunt/trophy. I wondered what cartridge one should choose? They look harmless and cute, but won't they gnaw your arm off like a twig of bamboo if you wound one?

Here are the three cartridges I considered candidates. The 6-250 w/ a 75 gr HP in a very accurate rifle for head shots, the 30-06 loaded with a 147 gr FMJ for penetration, or the 257 Roy with a 117 gr Interlock for a "middle of the road" approach and for longer shots.

Which would you choose?

When I reached the hunting grounds, I found the prey to be ellusive but self-assured. I guess that a black belt & recieving int'l protection as endangered can lead to that. Talk about unintended consequences for the do-gooders:

Even so, it took a while before I was able to catch the massive bear in a vulnerable spot, cocky as ever even with a 6mm hole through his abdomen:

We carefully chose our shots, documenting the whole ordeal even in spite of the peril we knew we faced if anyone found out we were chasing such a majestic and mysterious creature. Shot opportunities were few and far between, but carefully placed:

Even after several hits, he remained defiant. I obviously chose the wrong rifle for this; in the legendary words of Jewells Winfield, "we need shotguns for this...":

Finally, after an extended search for a wounded animal we knew had the cunning to watch his backtrail and karate chop us at any moment, my opponent lay vanquished:

Anyone have insight into ways around do-gooder importation rules? I'd like a full body mount to be the central point of interest in my trophy room!

Was grinning from ear to ear when I saw how Kung Fu Panda met his demise...

Now, that is a real hunt! I'd think that mounting won't be much of a problem, if you can work out the skinning technique. You sure wouldn't want to get too close to that critter.

Thats funny efw!

It might be a good time to start thinking of a DGR, something like a 416 Wby.

Marlin Guide Gun = Panda Thumper!

Those little bullets just didn't make much of an impression on the Black Belt Warrior Panda. I hear they will charge if wounded...

Thank you gentlemen; summer heat created by an entertainment necessity!!

Jim, "my" hayfield was planted in corn so we weren't able to play "reach out and touch someone," but found an abandoned McD's toy in my car to amuse myself en lieu...

That gentleman behind the 6mm-250 is my wife's cousin who went through hunter's safety w/ my 8 yo son & I this past spring, and is going to be coming to deer camp this fall! This was his 1st shooting outting in about a decade, and he had a hoot! I love picking up new recruits  !!!!

Only a few more months to go. I would like to see a comparison of the penetration and the recovered bullets for performance. I don't know how you managed to sleep the night before,,, aprehensive and all about the upcoming hunt. Great Post

No doubt... the pinky "skidoosh" was expected at any moment...

My biggest fear is running into the hefflump or the sasquatch that we have here in Western Washington, Panda's are pretty tame in compairson to a rogue sasquatch. Many here have had numerous encounters with them and survived but some may have not. who knows? Only weeks to go!

Bill,

I've definitely had several run-ins with a Sasquatch in the Chiliwack Valley. You watch Scotty and Brian. I know they are brave boys, but they've never had a run-in with a Sasquatch.

Keep an eye on McD's boys, you never know when they'll offer a Sasquach toy for you to use and abuse all in the name of overcoming your fears!!!!

I know that I will be a lot less jumpy walking alone in the dark this fall knowing that I whooped the ninja-panda!

Its all about building confidence...

If you've ever seen the Jack Links beef jerky commercials you know why you shouldn't mess with sasquatch

Great shooting EFW! I might have to see if I can find a panda or two to launch! Scotty

Very well done. Your story had a profound impact on my life. A mere elk will never again be a worthwile challenge.
Thank you for the much needed comic relief. I think I can make it till hunting season now.

I'm glad you liked it. Nothing like a little levity to brighten our days!

If you like the panda, you'd LOVE a wooly mammoth:
