Mysteries of the Moose

It is well done; it is always fascinating to watch the videography provided by many of the nature films. I'm fascinated by the Russian title; is the magazine produced in Russia?

No not at all. I got the link from a very popular French magazine in Québec called Sentier Chasse et Peche http://www.sentierchassepeche.com//index.php.

I'm sure one could easily find other links to it as I too thought it was a little odd, but as long as the content is there I don't mind it. Seems to have been made by NationalGeographic (the yellow rectangular logo in the top-left corner of the film)

Majestic is really the only word that comes to mind when I think of the Moose.

Where in Ontario are you from Lou?

Have you considered going out in September during the archery season? We do as its open at the prime of the rut and also...firearms aren't allowed in our zone (exception of muzzleloaders, which is only allowed during the 2nd season in mid october).

6 months and counting!

My favourite is early season moose. The season opens on August 15, which is a holiday at my house.

I have to admit that I'd need some guidance in such an early hunt - we spot and stalk while calling in our moose, so when not in a rut, it'd be a whole different challenge, one that I'd be more than up to take.

I'm just north of Toronto Ben...my buddy took a nice bull last year during the archery season...I have a newfy moose hunt booked for the fall...otherwise we hunt moose in wmu 15A...but chose newfoundland for this year with my buddy's from ottawa...they have been going to the same camp for about 7 yrs...100% success every year...still going to get a tag here as well...i'm still in pool 1...regards..Lou

Well done. Moose are very intriguing animals. I've never seen the cows get territorial within the harem like that. Nor seen a bull chasing a cow away.

It amazes me that humans get so close to such a large, wild animal with such aplomb. Scary.

Newfoundland and Yukon are on my bucket list for Moose hunting. I have friends who've been in NF and they to got their bulls.

Good luck with the draw - I would hate to have to deal with that! The new moose management plan in Qc just got implemented so for us it now means, in our zone, that cows will only be eligible every four years instead of every second year. The new plan is zone specific and for our zone the goal is obviously to increase the population. It's all good though - my hunting partners and I see it as a long term investment.

Love it here - Ottawa is just accross the river.

In newfoundland, we all have either sex tags, which is , bull, cow or calf...i'll be happy with a nice eating young bull, or a nice cow..I've been to quebec 2 times in 2008..mt tremblant with my wife, and then again in november for a winter caribou hunt for 4 days...we were 6 hunters and tagged 12 caribou..it truely is a beautiful province...Lou :)

I've never been on a caribou hunt up in northen quebec; sure sounds like you guys had a great time filling out all your tags!

Nfld has quite a different Moose management plan - they sure don't have the low population issues that we have had here in the southern part of Quebec for the last 5-7years. The new plan should help out quite a bit, at least we really hope so.

Cheers
Ben

Hunting moose is a dream of mine. World's biggest deer. Dang...

Here in Washington, there's a growing moose population, but it's still a Once In a Lifetime tag. I wonder when (not if) the wolves will impact that population. Doggone it, I'd like to hunt the moose right here in my home state!

Non resident tags in the western states tend to be pretty expensive... A trip to Alaska or the Yukon for those giant moose would be terrific, but not in the budget at this time.

So, here's hoping I draw a moose tag before I'm too old to hunt!

Guy, I got a Maine moose tag in 1999. It was either sex and took 17 years to get. I've continued to put in for another moose permit but I'll probably need a motorized wheelchair with snow tires before I get another one. My moose was 802lbs with a 42.5 inch spread. Talk about good eating.

If there was a cheap and easy way to have you come up here in Qc, we'd be more than happy to have you join us, but I assume (let's remember the first three letters of that word shall we!) that a) I'd need a guiding license much like I'd need a freind to have one if I'd want to go to BC for a sheep/goat hunt :( b) we Moose hunt during the archery season (perhaps you hunt during the archery season) and c) there's no rifle season in our zone and d) we're not exactly next door.

But it could be worth looking into it. I'm sure outfitters here wouldn't be too too expensives compared to other places in NA.

That said, as much as I love to hunt Moose here, it's nothing really when compared to the monster in the Cdn Yukon and in Alaska, no question there.

IMO wolves will affect the Moose population in areas where they can chase them down easier, especialy in the winter when there isn't alot of snow accumulation on the ground. When you get into 3-4 feet of fresh snow, those Moose lenghty and slender legs does help them get around easier and will outrun a pack. Now it's not some of those huge lookin' wolves I saw posted in a recent post that hurting the Elks.

That was a great video Ben, thanks for posting the link.
