Hi Guy's

I bought a used 30-06 bolt action and plan to use it this deer season.
The Wt's here range from 125 - 160 lbs.
My question is what is the best weight and style to use? because I don't
a bullet that will over expand or under expand, and have to track a deer
into the next county. If it helps range will 0-125 yards.
I'am new to the 30 cal's, and thought some of you could help?

Thanks,

I would start with the 165 gr BT and RL 22 or IMR 4350 powder.

Agree with JD and Sniper....I shoot a 30-06 and use the 165 BT and RL 22 with Fed 210 match primers. I shoot a 22" Winchester Model 70 featherweight.

You've just received a unanimous vote for the BT. I've had good success with IMR4831, but the Nosler Guide (#6) lists IMR4350 as the most accurate powder (smallest Standard Deviation), so it is certainly a good powder to investigate first.

I have used Win 760 for many years with 150(and 130) gr bullets. IMR4064 has been excellent over the chro and accurate.
I have used BT and PAR bullets with excellent results.
For our Ca blacktail deer which are smal we have had super performance with Speer 130gr HP bullets and Win 760. I know it may not be a "deer" bullet but the 500+ one shot kills seem to say it works.

I agree with the others on the 165gr bullet. The BT for deer and the AB for elk. I haven't found a better shooting bullet for an 06.
I would look at the classic powder for the 06, IMR 4350, but would not rule out RL-19. RL-19 meters much better than 4350 and I have had great results with it.

I would look at the 165 Partition it will be better for you on those close shots your talking 125 to zero and it will do every thing you need for deer. It won't blow up on the shoulder at 20 yards good luck.

165gr Nosler Ballistic tip or a 165gr Sierra HPBT in front of 59grs of H4350 will do exactly what you want. A deer down where you shot him.

I use the 125 Nosler ballistic tip's in different 30 cal rifles for deer. If you keep it under 3100 fps muzzle velocity it kills deer like lightening has struck them. Don't try a Texas heart shot with this bullet. I shoot them thorough the shoulders or go in or exit a shoulder angle shots. I have killed around 20 deer with the 125 BT from 50 to 200 yards and have never had a single one take a step. I killed a big 9 point 190 pound buck last year at 107 yards with my 30X47 HBR that pushed the 125 BT 2850 fps. I shot him broad side through the center of the front shoulders and he dropped like a rock and never even quivered.

I have gotten a couple buddies to try the 125 BT's and they are now sold on the also.

53.1 grs Varget works great in the 30-06 with the 125 BT'S.
