took the old stock of my rem. 700 mnt. in a 280. put a synthetic on it. glass bedded the recoil lug and forend. the barrels is floated . gun is just heavier. my groups look like i am shooting a shotgun. it has a bushnell banner on it thats 2 months old and doesnt even have 50 rounds through it. loads are 53 gr. h4350, 52 gr.imr 4350, 55 gr. imr 4831 all with 140 btips. is it the scope, did i seriuosly screw something up. everythings tight on the bases and rings. HELP its driving me nuts.

I've read that the soda straw barrels on Mountain Rifles sometimes need a pressure point at the fore end tip... You might try a matchbook cover or credit card shim to test it out.

Do you have another scope to swap? Sometime scopes just die, doesn't matter what the round count is.

When you say shotgun sized groups, what does that mean, 3"-5" worse? Are they nice triangles, but large?

Kurt seems to have nailed it, those little barrels might need a pressure point, a credit card shim or rubber washer might be enough to test it.

I also agree about the scope. Swap it out to a known good scope and see if it makes any difference. Scotty

3 to 12" groups  just put my burris on it of my 338 wm i know its ok

Holy smokes. Try the pressure point. That is crazy. Almost sounds like the stock is binding the action. That is what my 25-06 CDL was doing until I put pillars in it. It went away directly after that. Scotty

i did they same thing to my rem 700 338 rum and the affects just the total opposite. great groups from 225 gr. ab's 250 pt's and 250 gr. barnes. i still have the old stock and will try the scope deal first then shim and finally the old stock.

Bushnell Banner???
Did you check for Paralax??
I don't think I've ever seen on of them that did have a foot of paralax at 100 yards.

If I understand you correctly, you only bedded the recoil lug area. If so, I recommend to do a full bedding of the action. Make sure you also bed about two inches at the front of the recoil lug. Put 3 layers of electrical tape at the bottom of the lug and to remove them when the epoxy cured.
