FINALLY got around to shooting my new .300 win mag. Had a heck of a time finding brass. The brass I used to get an initial load developed where federal factory brass from 150gr Fusion. I best group I had was this 72gr of IMR 4350. Measured .568, book says 3,330 FPS. I bought a neck sizer and only did the necks on the developing rounds. Trigger preset at 3.5 pounds
I have good glass and mounts, (Leupold Vari 3 4.5-14x40MM AO and Talley mounts). I also have another 50 rounds of new Hornady brass that I full length sized because I cant find Nosler brass ANYPLACE.

So my question is this,,, is this the best I can get out of a off the shelf rifle (Remington 783)?

I don't know if that's the best you can get or not, but a tight group like that, at 100 yards with a .300 Win mag is pretty doggone good.

How's it do with heavier bullets?

I don't know.. I wanted to use the 150gr ballistic for deer and that's all the bullets I bought for it. I did load 2 rounds of 165gr Sierra HPBT just to shoot off and those 2 rounds where touching...

Another things that irritates me about this is that I had to seat the bullet out further than I would of liked. I seated it as far out as my magazine would allow...

Sweet.

I'll bet that thing is one heck of a deer slayer... Or elk. Or bear. Or moose...

I bought it new in January and got the glass on it and searched and searched for components until about 2 weeks ago I scored 2 pounds of the IMR 4350 and had a chance to shoot it today. The lowest load was TERRIBLE like literally 4 inches and the max wasn't much better at about 2.5inches.

So I haven't shot it at anything with fur on it yet.

FOTIS, that's what im thinking... Just wishful thinking of getting a little more..

Personally I would work up a load with a 180 PT or AB and use it on everything. Pending on range that 150 BT can sure tear up a lot of meat!!!

I load 72 gr. H-4350 behind a 180 grain Nosler PT for "all" of my hunting. Magazine length minus just a little. My most accurate load ever was 70gr. of H-4350 with a 180 gr. Sierra BT. The Noslers consistently shoot under .750. The Sierra load shot .200. I only shoot the rifle a few times a year, because I have others that are more enjoyable to shoot. However I primarily hunt with this one. You might try the 180's and see how they work.

Do you Elian and fotis think the 180gr will be a bit much for whitetail?

You're already using a .300 Win mag on deer and you're worried about "a bit much" ?

Actually, I'd anticipate less meat damage with the heavier, slower bullet.

If you go with the Partition, the front portion is typically very soft, and expands readily, even on deer.

But... I have to admit, I don't see anything particularly wrong with your roughly half-inch 150 gr load either...

A lot of guys I know hunt deer, elk and bear with the same rifle and load. Keeps things simple. No flailing around for the right ammo or wondering which load the rifle was sighted-in with...

I like it simple.

The 150 BT are devastating on deer at 06 velocity, I love them. I think a 180 would be about perfect out of a 300. I really like the performance of the AccuBond out of the 300 on deer in both 150 and 180. In any event looks like your well on your way.

I have used the 180 Partition on deer for a number of years, going back to the early 70's. You are better off with a heavily constructed bullet as it typically causes less damage, especially if you can place your shots. Staying away from the shoulders will usually result in little meat loss and an outstanding blood trail. I failed to mention also that many have had great luck with H-1000 in the WM. I have never tried it because my load was developed before 1000, came out and I have never needed to test it.

I will update the results of this thread after PA deer season at the end of November, start of December...

No the 180 will do less damage than the 150. Remember the 180 is beefier and does not open up as fast as a 150 gr.

Jezzolo, try some 165, or 180 gr bullets, though there's nothing wrong with the group you posted. My 30-06 I picked up this winter did sub moa with Sierra 150's but onceci tried 165's it was eye opening. It consistently shoots them 1/2" or less. Can't wait to try 180's in it. Good luck with it. How do you like the 783? I just put one in .308 on layaway.

I would try 75.0 grs RL22 with a 180 gr BT. This is a proven load that has shot well under MOA in three different 300 Win Mag rifles. There are also a few others here that have has the same level of accuracy.
I would say if this load shoots under MOA, you will have a great shooting rifle. The 180 gr PT also shot well under MOA so you will have a load that is up to the task for anything in NA.

BretN, I love the rifle.. Light weight, recoil isn't terrible (but it isn't for the "light in the loafers" type), and it fits me AWESEOME, but not crazy about the magazine, I would rather have a floor plate but I was on a budget and over looked that.

FOTIS,, the 180gr you mentioned, do you mean a ballistic tip or the Partition? Also whats the difference between a 180gr Partition and a 180gr PP Partition???

JD338,, Wanted to try the RL powder with this current load but cant find that powder up here.. Took me a while to find the IMR4350 and then when I did find it I had a co-worker friend get it that lived near the shop. It was about an hour from my house..
