Couldn't resist when a very meticulous gun-tinkerer, hunter, handloader and BR competitor decided to sell his .375 H&H mag, especially when he threw in loading dies, brass, bullets and some ammo:

I think it's going bear hunting with me in September...

Guy,

Congratulations on your Ruger No. 1 Big Bore 375 H&H Mag!
Should be a dandy for your bear hunt.
What kind of glass are you going to mount?
Give us a range report.

I hope it shoots good for you.I have a Tropical in the ,405 win.I really like it a lot.I put a 1.5 X5 Leupold matte finished scope with heavy duplex on it.

Thanks guys! I'm sure excited about it. Have been wanting one of these for a long time... Over 20 years... Finally the right deal came up, and I was in a position to buy. Nice...

Dunno what I'm going to scope it with. Have several candidates on hand here already:

2-7x Redfield
3-9x Leupold
6x Leupold
2.5x Leupold

I tried the 3-9x on it earlier today. Looks okay, but it's an older scope (1974) with very limited eye relief when set much above 3x or 4x. At 9x the eye relief is way to scary for something that's going to kick like a .375 H&H... Am thinking for now I may strip the fixed 6x off my .22 Marlin and just use it for sight-in work and maybe the first hunting week too. Anticipating 150 - 300 yard shot at a black bear in September. Was figuring the 260 AccuBond sighted in at 200 yards would work just fine...

I may well end up getting one of those 1.75-6x Leupold scopes, but not for a while. Gun money has just dried up! Any remaining "sporting" money is going to be spent on hunting trips, meat processing and taxidermy.. Hopefully!

Just remember that the scope is mounted on the barrel and a load worked up with one scope may not do as well if you change scopes. Been there.Rick.

Very nice guy.
That 2.5 Leupold looks like an H&H Scope to me!
Of course after the wife was paid off.....er...the gun money freed up, I'd consider either the 1-4 VXII or the really nice 1.75-6

Cool! Good idea about the peep sight.

Wife said something about "going shopping" and I haven't seen the results of that trip yet... Hmmmm. Actually, I got a really good deal on the rifle & stuff... Wasn't much of a strain on the ol' family budget at all.

Looking at the pair of Rugers, a 7mm Rem mag and the .375 H&H, I have to wonder a bit if I actually need any other hunting rifles... Except of course a varmint rifle...

Regards, Guy

Nice! Congrats!!

With ya'll posting pics of the Ruger #1s ya'll have me thinking of getting one.

Guy,

Quit being so practical, tsk, tsk..... Its not a matter of need....

All you need to do is look at it from a womans perspective.

* "It was on sale".
* "It matches my hair or eyes".
* "I cant go to a new hunting spot with an old rifle".
* "Diamonds come from carbon, if I shoot it enough, just maybe I can get you those earrings for you."
* "So & so got one, he liked it so much, I just had to get too."
* "I was feeling down today and needed something to brighten my day"..

Let us know how those work out for the next beautiful # 1 that comes along....

WOW, Nodak. It sounds like you are experienced! This is like sitting at the feet of a guru. I'll be trying this, for certain.

I have a love/hate relationship with #1's.I have owned many over the years. Some shot great ,others wouldn't shoot no matter what you did.Part of it was the old Wilson (tent stake) barrels that Ruger use to use.The hanger has always been an accuracy problem for those rifles.I now have a .204 and the .405.They both give good accuracy.I had to do some work on the .204 to get it to shoot MOA.I love the way they look, but they can be a real PITA.
I am thrilled to death that Ruger chambered the #1 in .405 win. That was my wish for many years.I have several 95's that I love, but I always want it in the #1.It is a fantastic hunting rifle.I have shot deer and wild hogs.It slams them. The Winchester Hi Wall is my all time favorite single shot rifle design, but Kile Miller makes a single shot action that is unreal! I have been to his shop in ST.Oange South Dakota.

!885 and 1886,two of my favorite rifles on earth.Damn John Browning was such a genius.
I wish you the best of luck with your new .375 H&H ! Let us know how it shoots.

Good move
Many happy hunts aheat with that rifle and caliber
Good Hunting
Elkhunt

The 260 Gr. AB is a great bullet out of a 375. Elk, deer, bears, bigfoot, loch ness monster, none of them stand a chance.

Your going to love that thing,

Congrats!

I just notice that Ruger is chambering their #1 in .450/400 Nitro Express. Damn how I would love to get my hands on one of those.

But I really have no need for it. I can do the same thing with my #1 in .405 winchester, handloading the 400 grain bullet.
