Ruger #1 envy, itch scratched

I found some of what I was looking for. I guess d’arcy Echols built a falling block for bob schniedmiller to take to Africa. Since schniedmiller had a lot of 50-140 3 1/4” brass so they used modern bullets and powders to duplicate or beat 500 nitro performance. This is some of their data from cartridges of the world vol 16

I guess it’s better that I have the muzzle brake.

Wow what a beast! You sure got the unusual covered! That cartridge boggles the mind. You got any reservations about pulling the trigger? I know I would!

Oh wow what a sledgehammer!!! [emoji51] can't wait to see what it does. Man what a beast of a cartridge.

Finally got to get out snd shoot the 50-140. The lighter loads 580gr @ 1600fps were mild snd fun. Some of the hotter loads 580 @ 2100fps were stout. It shot well but I only ran about 10 off the bench. This isn’t exactly a bench gun!

Yeah, 580 grains at 2100 fps calculates out to a fair recoil. That amount of mass at that velocity will be hard to stop once it begins to penetrate an animal.

580 grains at 2100 fps isn't that about the equivalent of a 500 NE, 500 Jeffrey? Lord i bet that thing kills on one end and mauls on the other lol.

After all the awesome ruger #1s on here lately I couldn’t pass up this rifle when I came across it. A local fellow gun looney who I have traded with many times picked this up and I was able to talk him out of it.

It is a ruger #1 from 1984 originally a 375 H&H that had been rebarreled to 50-140 sharps with a .510 bore. The story as I heard it was that it was built by a local gunsmith who has since passed away. While not quite as pretty as some of your #1s it doesn’t have a bad piece of wood. I would have preferred that it hadn’t been ported but might appreciate it when it comes to shooting.

It came with dies brass and a very heavy ammo can full of 580gr cast bullet. Also a box of 700gr jacketed bullets. I have a limited amount of load data and looking for more if anyone has any.

The 50-140 is a very impressive cartridge. Luckily it can be loaded from mild to wild.

This is a loaded 50-140 next to a 458 Lott and 30/06. Unusual to see the 458 Lott looking so small by comparison!

I just keep looking at that cartridge and how it makes the 458 lott look small lol.

That 50-140 would be a good one to shoot at the "Safari Rifle Championship" near Libby Montana if it's held this coming summer.

I shot my 375 H&H Number One there in 2019 and it was an awful lot of fun. Some real big boomers were being used, mostly classic "dangerous game" cartridges & rifles.

It was a hoot. It's actually a fundraiser for a high school shooting team. The guys 'n gals and all those cool dangerous game rifles are great! 470 nitro doubles... All kinds of stuff.

The local range was improved, I think a few acres were added and a couple more ranges were built since I was there, summer of 2019.
