New 338-378 Wby Accumark is ordered. Dies ordered too. To start reloading, picked up a 1 lb of H-1000 and a 1 lb of Retumbo along with a box of 225 gr Hornady IBs. Time now to contemplate a scope for the beast.

I`m gonna have some good `ol fun with this one!

That sounds pretty exciting. I cannot imagine how the BEAST will kick! One pound what does that figure out to 10 loaded cartridges! I think you better buy this in the 8 pound kegs!!

The Accumark will have the muzzle brake, so it may not be all that bad. My 375 Ruger Alaskan has no brake and (on a bet), I`ve benched 20 rounds in one session using a friend`s 460 Wby DGR (500 grainers) without a brake. A good padded shooting vest and a longer eye relief scope does the trick. My buddy didn`t think I could do it. My very expensive (but free) dinner was great that night.

A lb. of each powder for now, will determine what the rifle likes best. After that, there`s more powder where they came from.

Without calculating, I figure maybe about 80 to 90 rounds per lb? (guessing).

Congratulations on the 338-378 Wby. You should be able to get the 250 gr AB near 3100 fps.
With a max load of H1000, (107.0 grs) you are looking at 65 rounds per pound (7000 grs).
The big magnums have an appetite for powder. :)

Look at the Leupold Mark 4 4.5-14x40mm scope. It will give you the magnification for most shooting and can withstand the recoil.

Yeah, I was thinking a pound of powder wouldn't last a big-cased Weatherby very long!

...........................Considering the Mk4 LR/T 4.5-14x40. No gold ring though! Also, the turrets are are too high imo.

However Leupold does offer the 4.4-14x40 VX3 with their new CDS system which basically works the same way but with lower turrets. And there`s a gold ring too. Leupold supplies whatever CDS dials are needed, based on whichever cartridge, the bullet and MV is used.

Has anyone tried the new VX3 scope with the CDS (Custom Dial System) yet???

No Gold Ring but its Leupold and used by our military and law enforcement.
Repeatability is absolute.

That is what I got for my 378 Bee. A mark 4 4.5x14x40mm LRT scope. Tall turrets....they do not bug me that much.....yet. 30mm tactical rings and 20 MOA Picatinny style base.

I have broken erectors on a 3.5x10 and a 4.5x14x10 leupies on that 378 Bee. Hence the MK4.

.....................JD338..........Now that I`m looking at the pic of your rifle, the taller turrets aren`t all that bad looking. What is the OAL of your rifle and how long is the barrel? Trying to get an idea how that same scope scope will look on the Accumark. According to Wby, the Accumark specs are 48.5" OAL with a 28" long barrel including the brake.

.....................It looks like Retumbo gets the best speeds in all bullet weights according to Hodgdon, AND uses more powder than H-1000.

Congrats there Big Squeeze! That's one heck of a cartridge & rifle.

Your pound of Retumbo is going to last for about 60 shots - then you'll need more powder... Hah!

There's a local doctor here who is quite an avid elk hunter. He's got one of those big Weatherby Accumark rifles - in .338-378. What a rompin' stompin' cartridge! Pretty well walks all over the other big .338's by a couple of hundred fps.

...................................It is likely that many 338 owners have that `ol standby the 338 Winny, followed by the 338/06s, the 338 Federals, along with an occassional 340 Wby and so on. I just wanted to be a little different stepping away from the usual norm. Probably not too many 338-378s hanging around in the gun safes of 338 owners.

One thing is for sure though. This round will NOT be boring by any means. It`ll be one kick azz (not mine) long range hammer with a huge bark to her.

Out of courtesy, fair warnings will be given to those at the range, who just might happen to be benching next to or near me.

The Accubrake will tame her down quite a bit but you may want to wear both plugs and ear muffs. Back in my high power competition days, I started bearing both and my scores went up.

Let us know how she shoots, should be a lot of fun for ya.

BS,

Its a stock M700 LSS with a 26" barrel. When the time comes, I will rebarrel it with a Hart #5 Fluted 27" tube and have the action blueprinted.

She is a sub .5 MOA shooter as is. Take a look at the 250 gr AB for your 338-378 Wby. BC is .575.

JD338

Going to go with the 4.5-14x40 LR/T. Don`t need a gold ring. The 250 gr Nosler AB is most assuredly on my list of bullets to try.

Congrats on that monster. That is my dream .338 rifle. Those Accumarks are some really sharp rifles and that big 338 will be fearsome on the big mtns. Can't wait to hear how it shoots. Scotty
