New to us Rem 700 SPS in 25 Whelen

IMG_20151226_142229916.jpgjBack out again today with Chronograph, the readings blew
Me aways even though we do have a 24" barrel, the avg vel
With 53.5 grs 4831sc was 3240 fps here is the grouping
20151226_132831.jpg

But this was the one that got me, PPU case, CcI mag primer, 57 gr of RL 25, 117gr SST, here is the actual vel
Of that load, ??? Is this not 257 Weatherbee stuff???
20151226_131911.jpg
Two shots raised the turret a few clicks and two more from this load.
I am now wondering if those loads I posted with RL 25 and 100gr bullets over 3600fps
May actually be true??

Earle,

Nice shooting. Give Retumbo a try with the Hornady 117 gr SST.
It should get you where you want to be.

Either your chrony is off or your pressures are astronomical. Anything over 3100-3200 is crazy.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with Fotis, about 3200 would be the ceiling. I'd suspect you'd notice something as far as PSI signs at 3400+.

Looks like it's shooting relatively well though. Shouldn't be long before it'll be tearing up the yotes

Excellent point, Fotis. I believe all of us have made that mistake at least once. A little ice can play havoc with fully opening the Chrony.

Oh yes. 308 Norma magnum launching 200 gr partitons at 3200 fps from a 22 inch tube!

Yea,
Seamed crazy high to me as well, chrono was opened all the way, these loads appear to show zero signs of high
Preasures.......... no sticky bolt lift, raise it with one finger,no flattening of primers...... RL 25 does sound louder,
Kick harder, and not group as well and seamed to consistantly show 175fps more vel???
Sounds like maybe the chrony has gone nuts?

It's probably just the way you were shooting over the chrono. I've had the same thing happen a few times.

You'd see some sorta signs with a 117 at 3400. Even a 257 Weatherby would be close to top end with that sorta speed.

IMG_20151230_084952954.jpgI think I may have solved the chrono problem!
After closer examination of the unit I realized that the QD block that goes with the tripod , which attaches to the bottom, was indeed restriction the full travel of the chrono two halfs to open absolutely flat ! It wasn't much but thought I would measure exactly how much, OUCH.
View attachment 1 2.6 degrees .....
Something tells me that needs to be addressed!

Update here is the new and improved model! That's better (y)

I bet your right again Mike! And maybe this will help someone else sometime! Wonder if 1 degree is about
75fps?? :?

Here is the actual 5 shot avg with 57 gr of RL25
Powder, once the Chrony was opened completely!
Using 117gr SSTs. CCI mag primers and Hornady cases.
