Nickle plated brass?

I am thinking about getting nickle plated brass for my 25-06. My thought is to easier to separate brass when tumbling. Is it worth the extra $5 for nickle plated or not?

Only if you like the colour.

Some factory-loaded ammo is nickle-plated these days. I see no reason not to use it, if its all you can find.
I used it in a wsm-style rifle and found it did not last any more reloads over brass cases.

YMMV,

Plus side..... you can leave it for long periods in an ammo sleeve without risk of corrosion. Good for long term storage, especially if the primer and bullet are sealed against moisture.

Minus side .... hard and can be rough on dies. Inspect regulary. And rough spot in the plating can scratch the inside of the die.

While I do have both normal and nickle brass in my rifle calibers, I do have about 5K nickle in pistol.

And again....only benefit I have found is the anti-corrosion property of nickle.

I use it also. No difference but it does let me see the difference from the 270 vs 7 WSM in the tumbler.

I really don't like them. I find them hard to resize, especially the 7mm mag.

Blessings,
Dan

To the original question, only you can determine if nickle plated brass is worth the extra five dollars. You'll get the same life out of the nickle plated cases as you would from brass cases. If you like the colour, they are worth the extra cost. If that isn't a serious consideration, it may not be worth the cost. I have some cartridges that are loaded with nickle plated cases because I was able to pick up quite a few bags of cases at a good price. Personally, I wouldn't pay extra just for the colour.

I bought several hundred nickel Remington cases in .257 Roberts a long while ago and they have held up well. I did go through an expander ball in my RCBS die while sizing them the first time. The necks were very rough. I got some Remington nickel for 7mm Rem Mag and had no trouble at all with them. I worked up some very good loads with them. I wish Winchester sold unfired nickel.

Speaking of nickel. They have some WW nickel 280 Rem brass on sale for about 20.00 a bag. I think they have three bags. If any of you all want it, I would pick them up and send them your way.

Wow! Twenty dollars a bag! If there weren't a border between us and an antsy Homeland Security, I'd be all over that. I have a couple of bags of the WW .280 brass. It has served me well in my .280s.

I wonder if that stuff is really nickle? Ken Waters made a comment in one of his Pet Loads articles that he thought it might be cadmium. I would have to go through the entire book to try and find that comment and frankly, I'm just too damn lazy to do so.

I like it. Doesn't pick up dirt and grit at the range. Requires only a very short tumble to get the fouling off. That being said, I don't use it for my day to day ammo because of the issues cited above. Don't know about the hard on dies part, nickel is significantly softer than die steel, but they are noticeably harder to FL resize.

I do like it for my hunting loads. I can keep them for years in an ammo pouch without the corrosion I would get with brass cases. They feed a little slicker and they sure look sexy. Also easier to find in the leaves or at the range. Over the life of a case, that $5 extra is offset pretty quickly.

Worth the money for hunting ammo in my opinion. I stick with plain old brass for my shootin' ammo though.

Man, did I miss out. At the range, a few guys were shooting nickle brass. They probably left 200+ rounds in the range bucket. I left it as I thought you needed carbide dies to reload it.

I like the nickel brass. It helps me differentiate between my dad's 30-06 brass/loads and my 30-06 brass/loads. Have not noticed any problems with it. I obtained 100 empties back before I was reloading after shooting the win Failsafe for several years.

Will do. Been hunting today. Trying to catch up.

I like using it when I have some similar loads to make it easy to differentiate between them. I have also used it when I had more than one gun in the same caliber to easily separate empties for them. As far as any performance difference, I never noticed any.
