Was talking with a "new pistol shooter recently who related that she was not able to identify a dominant eye. She shoots pistol with both eyes open and was concerned that her sight picture wasn't staying consistent. I started her shooting rifle years ago and had her shoot "left eye" because she was left handed. Not being a pistol shooter myself, what do you suggest? Thanks CL

Maybe have her try a red-dot vs iron sights & see how she likes it. Both eyes open with a red-dot should make it easier to get on target quicker and gives better depth perception.

+1

As a collateral duty, I was a firearms instructor for a federal agency and this wasn't too uncommon. Especially for new shooters. Learning the shoot with both eyes open will probably provide the most benefits and be relatively easy to learn. The red dot will definitely simplify the sight picture/plain; however, may be frustrating for a new shooter that hasn't had enough proper reps for consistent presentation. My wife is right-handed and left eyed dominant which seems to be more difficult to modify than just not being able to identify which eye is dominant...

I know that may not answer your question, but I think you were on the right track.

My experience is similar to Rhinos, particularly with woman. There are a number of sound tactical reasons to shoot with both eyes open and with a bit of practice the dominate eye still takes over sight alignment. I had most of my swat guys shooting both eyes open back to about 25 yards with no issues, handguns and rifles, once we went to low power optics (ACOG) or aim points to 100 yards easy. If she takes up trap and sporting clays she’ll be money ahead being comfortable shooting with both eyes open. She doesn’t need to fire a shot to get good practice simply doing the repetitions, presenting the pistol, will get her dialed in.

We teach how to determine dominant eye in Hunter Safety Education. I have also been advocating shooting/hunting with both eyes open. In the deer woods, you see deer reactions to the shot when you have both eyes open, even with the big boomers I’ve been known to use.
