Nosler 185 gr HP tip getting sheared by barrel throat

I have an almost-new Rock River .45 wadcutter that is nicking 185 gr Nosler HP bullets on the bottom part of the barrel throat and jamming the slide of my 1911. I've tried two different OALs; 1.240 and 1.225, both with no success. The problem happens more often with the 1.225 length, but even at 1.240, 2-3 rounds in a magazine of 5 rounds jam. I can't go much longer with the OAL, since the shape of the bullet limits max OAL and would cause magazine feed problems.

The bottom-most edge of the barrel throat is literally shearing off the coppler plating on the very rim of the HP tip. I've tried Rainier 185 gr HP's with the same result. A close inspection of the barrel throat to receiver ramp distance doesn't look any different than my Kimber Gold Match.

Does anyone have a suggestion (I'm already considering sending the gun back under warranty) where my reloading might be causing the problem? I put a very slight taper crimp on the bullet. :(

mdurstewitz,

Welcome to the forum.

I'm no expert but it sounds like your gun needs to be sent back under warrenty.

I'm beginning to agree with you. I received a very prompt reply from Nosler, suggesting I try 1.200 OAL instead of the 1.225 I was using. I promptly reloaded 50 rounds and took them to the range. Same problem. I also brought my Kimber with me, and it shot both length bullets with no jams at all.

I took it apart again this evening, but I can see nothing wrong. I suspect that it may be the barrel link, allowing the barrel to come off the receiver ramp enough that the rounds are catching between the very sharp barrel throat and the feed ramp on the receiver. Looks like I'll have to send it back.

I would send it back and have the factory go over everything since it is under warrenty.
Let us know how things turn out.

Will do, but I'm heading out to sea tomorrow, so I'll have to send it back to them when we return.

Have a good trip. Hope you get your pistol sent in and repaired so you can post some target pics.

Hopefully, it won't take them too long to figure out what's wrong. I don't expect I'll have it back in time for the Butner, NC Bullseye match at the end of September, so I'll have to use my Kimber Gold Match instead. It's a good pistol, but not custom built like the Rock River is. Here's a photo of the Rock River, complete with Herrett grips (if I can figure out how to post the pix)...nope, couldn't figure out how to attach a picture.[/img]
