For self-defense, or for hunting in tough country causing exertion, this would be some good training! Get the heart pumping, the breathing up, then try to shoot accurately under the pressure of time! Love it. This is stuff that I've been doing with "my" cops for years, though of course using their duty handguns, rifles & shotguns!

That approximates real world, to be sure. Man, don't think I'm up to it. Maybe a 40 yard amble is closer to my capability nowadays.

I hear you Mike! The good thing is, a hunter of any age could do something like this to the best of his/her own abilities. Work hard enough to get the heart rate & breathing rate up, then try to shoot accurately..

Great for self defense training too. I've done a lot of this kind of thing with the SWAT team and some in the Marines as well. Tough to hit well when breathing hard.

Currently I do some training along these lines, but using Air Soft pistols instead.

DrMike, To make this more interesting, some age brackets should have a scheduled 5 minute coffee break.

This or similar practice is a must do for me before returning to the Montana mountains next fall..
I had to remind my guide this year that I needed to be able to breath if we did spot an elk..

Bingo! I hear that!

...dang, I'm outta breath just from reading the article, I have seen a Xcountry/ biatholon in CO...

If you are going to have that coffee break I am in. If we drink a large cup of Timmie with all that caffeine I sure our heart rate will be up some !!

Blessings,
Dan

Now, Dan, not certain all our 'Merican friends will know what a Timmie's is. You might need to explain.

It should really be split by age class, because the scoring seems more weighted on the running than shooting. Then just for "hunters", they should be required to wear boots, carry an 8 lb. rifle, and 20 lb. day pack. Of course range finders, bino's, water and a lunch should be stored in the pack. I also noticed it seemed pretty flat, to emulate field conditions a 20% grade should be part of the run. All kidding aside, it looked like all, were having a great time.
