Odd rifle cleaning today?

I cleaned my dads Remington 700 today and found something odd. He has never deep cleaned the rifle other than using a bore snake every fall. He has 50-70 rounds through it total. I used the foam bore cleaner and it came out black with no blue. From there I uses sweets 7.62 and it was spotless. He shoots federal fusion ammo and it shoots well. I was shocked that there was no copper in the barrel. Is this common? My ruger M77 shows copper after 20 rounds and it takes 5-8 patches of sweet,s to get it out.

I've had a few rifles that are like that. I couldn't tell you what causes it, but it's sort of like hitting a gold mine. (My 700 .243 is like this.)

Your father got a good one. That barrel came out smooth! Just like a custom (expensive) tube.

I don't see any fouling after 50 - 75 rounds through a Krieger, but lots of fouling after 40 rounds through my Remington .25-06 barrel.

He may have knocked out whatever minimal fouling there was, through use of the bore-snake.

I wouldn't be surprised if a run of Bore-Tech Eliminator provided some blue on some patches with that bore. It may be that he's been shooting enough factory ammo that the carbon level is very high, and you're just not down to any copper yet, as well. Or, perhaps you got a smooth bore that truly doesn't foul. I have yet to own or work with one like that, even in the "custom hand-lapped barrel" space - though my sample of those rifles is n=1, so it's not a huge sample.

What dubyam says. Metal and carbon fouling can layer up.

My 700 in .223 once fooled me into thinking it would not metal foul. Ha. It fouls, all right.

Same thoughts and experience's here,,,and then RR too.

It was gunslick foam. How do I find out if there is copper in there when sweets shows nothing?

Dont want to burst your bubble....and I could be wrong. But Dad thought his 7Mag was clean too until he borrowed my wipe out. Several times with lots of carbon and the the copper and then more carbon etc. Hoppes #9 did not get it all. Hope you have better luck. CL

Hoppes No.9 is great stuff, and I still use it myself for specific reasons and purposes BUT BT Eliminator is some very good stuff. It's not the be-all-end-all solvent but it sure comes close. It is great for the bulk of the cleaning. Sweet's will get the most stubborn metal fouling out of a bore. Adn Hppoe's will get the aggressive solvents out when you're done and preserve the metal.

Any solvent can appear to have done the ultimate, but it should always be verified through the use of others until you figure it all out.

BTE is great stuff. I use the heck out of it on my bores. You don't have to overdo it, but when you need clean bores, it does great work.

I think your father's bore isn't a big fouler and you removed whatever copper that was in there with the foam cleaner. If there was copper left, the Sweet's would have shown something. I too am a big BTE fan now. I have the same foam and it never seems to come out clean after repeated applications. I switched to BTE and my bores cleaned up much quicker. I tried GS foam after BTE was used and it didn't produce any residue.

That's the real test, Catskill. I've chased a number of solvents with BTE, and gotten copper and carbon out. I've not found anything that will get additional copper/carbon out after I declare a bore clean with BTE. I used to use the foams all the time - there's a thread on here about my discovery of foam cleaners from a number of years ago - but I've all but given up on anything other than straight BTE with a Hoppe's #9 chaser! I only use the Hoppe's #9 as a wash and because I like the smell...

Yeah, I'm liking it alot. I cleaned up my 30-06 BDL with BTE which never had any copper solvents applied to her previously. Got it clean and then soaked up the bore with Kroil. I let it sit a few months, brushed it and then hit it with BTE again and nothing came out. That has never been the case previously. Usually in an old gun, that Kroil soak and brush would loosen up all sorts of crud.

No smell and only a few applications and it's done.
