Oh Dan.......

I don't know that an 8.5 would be "better," but it would spin heavy bullets faster. Truthfully, a 9.5 twist will work just fine with 160s, and my 10 twist on my 7RM works quite well for 175 grain PTs. On the other hand, the 10 twist in my Model 70 280 has difficulty stabilising 160s, whereas the 9 twist in my Model 700 handles them quite easily. Having said all that, Yoda suggests that a 9.5 twist will work very well.

I would always err on the side of more twist than not enough within reason. If I was planning on shooting 160's and 175's, especially some of the longer ones out there, the 8.5-9 twist would be pretty nice. It'll shoot the lighter ones just fine as well.

No one can predict what may be coming down the pike in terms of bullets. However, the fact that a growing number of people are shooting 180 grain Bergers in their 7mm WSMs may be the cusp of a trend toward heavy for calibre bullets. It would be a return to the future for shooters.

I think 9.5 will be the rate & a PacNor tube. I am going to check with McMillan regarding a composite stock this time:) of course it will be pillar bedded  I hoping for another Defiance action with a Jewel trigger or Rifle Basix.
The plan is coming together:)
Mike do you know what it would take to order these items & get them shipped up here as I have someone that will put it all together.

Blessings,
Dan

24houcampfire is probably the best spot to order a Mcmillan stock from and yes they do ship to Canada :) If you want to go lightweight the Edge stock is great, they finish up at around 22 oz, maybe a Mcswirly? If you want to consider a Bechmark barrel I could send you the phone # of the guy who imports them, we will see how that tube shoots when the Whelen comes in hopefully next week.

Find someone who is permitted and they can bring the stuff in. Check with you local fellow as he may well have all his permits in order. I know that Corlane is permitted on the Defiance actions, Jewel triggers and McMillan stocks. I would assume that Prairie gun works also has these items permitted. Since you've worked with Tim at Corlane previously, give him a call (I happen to know that he is on today) and see if he can cut you a break on cost.

Don't really care too much to shoot Bergers, but a 175 AB would be the heat Mike! That little 7 could launch them around 2900 and man, the BC on them would make them a serious contender in the hunting field. I think the extra twist would keep straight too. I know I would be scrambling to try them should they ever be released. I wouldn't relish the rebarrel if they didn't shoot, but I would try them, that is for sure.

The fact that my 7RM shoots 175 PTs and 175 TBBCs so well, tends to make me hopeful that a ten twist 7WSM would handle them well. However, my 7WSM has a slightly faster twist, so it is not a problem in any case. It does handle 160s very well, and that is really good enough for me. A 160 AB launched at 3000 + fps is fearsome medicine for about any game in these parts.

Without a doubt Mike, but if it ain't broken, might as well fix it till it is, right?

Undoubtedly, that is the action I tend to take.

The lead time on my 2 Pac-Nor's have been right at 4 months Dan that included truing my actions and chambering. I would make sure you have some dummies for chambering. If the Defiance is like a Rem 700 LA you can seat them bullets way out there I had my chambered at 3.45" which puts a 140 AB right at the neck shoulder junction, and a 160 just barely in the shoulder. Gives you a good performance bump over SAMMI specs.
