I was given a can of some old H4198 powder in the old metal can, seems to have almost no smell, nothing acidic.
cans in good shape, label still looks in good shape. looks to be stored properly.
Loaded up three rounds to try out.
Good or bad idea?

Nah, bad idea.. Send it to me instead...

Just kidding Randy. It's still fine. Matter of fact, I still buy Metal canned IMR4198 from one place. Works fine. Awesome 45-70 powder. You using it in the 444?

Yes, trying in my 444.
Going to chrono the three and see how they compare to my regular loads

I'm certain it is fine. I've used powder that was well over 40 years old, and it was fine. Just remember that burn rates change; start low and work up.

I have some old Green Dot in the cardboard cans that my dad must have bought in the early 70s. Its price is $3.75. Its really dirty compared to the new stuff. Thats about the only difference I've seen. I know it was stored in a basement that had higher humidity for a long time and it still works fine. The little green flakes are pretty well faded now though.

Was finally able to try the old powder.
Velocity average was the same as the new stuff but had much higher extreme spreads.
Accuracy was the same.
Going to load it up for my practice/plinking rounds

41-42 gr with 300 grain bullet. or 44 gr with the 265.

Actually 47gr with a 265............and yes it's the ones I got from you

I still have IMR 4895, IMR 4831, IMR 4320, IMR 4064 and R905 in metal cans. I use all these without problems. Store at room temperature and keep out of direct sunlight.
