270 Win SGK 130gn H4831 ladder test.

Do you have any RL22? In three M700s it shot lights out with both the 130 Sierra Pro Hunter and Game King, usually a pretty good window between 58-60 grains or so. I know H4831 is the first many mention with the 270, but I've found RL22 (and Ramshot Hunter) to both give better velocities and accuracy. H4350 worked great with the Pro Hunter in my brother's 270, I think I used 54.0 grains. It wasn't a speedster, maybe 2800-2850 fps but seemed to really slay the deer, like a perfect velocity for the Sierra PH.

I would think H4831sc is closer to RL22 which is probably better if the bullets are at the heavier end of the spectrum. H4350 is closer to RL17 and more likely better suited to those 130’s. Perhaps also more likely to get a complete burn in the shorter barrel. Also very temp stable if you need that.

I do have some RL22. Going to push the H4831 a bit harder and change to starline brass.. ladder test loading up. RL 17 looking very promising at 54.1-54.4. Right at 3100 at very consistent V.

Right now RL17, Norma and Barnes TTSX
h4831, starline and SGK.

If I get that Starline SGK working good, I’ll load up a pile of those. I have about 75 partitions I could use (130gn). If that H4831 doesnt get accuracy and reasonable speed, will give RL 22 and 19 a shot. Would like to get some working combos before trying Nosler AB or PT. Enjoying the work up.

Thank you all for the dialogue… I would have never thought to try RL17. Just never worked great in my other rifles..
Neck turning mandrel should show up next week.. so can tune up the necks.. both the Norma and Starline had pretty good necks. The factory necks from R&P, Super-X, and Winchester were all over the place…it was pretty old brass. Annealed it and trimmed it. Some the necks weee well over SAAMI max… shelved all the mixed headstamps.

Just a quick update.
Extended the ladder test. 130gn SGK, H4831, Seated 0.020” off the lands. Prior test it was close to 0.140” off the lands
59.0 - 2911
59.3 - 2951
59.6 - 2980
59.9 - 2996
60.2 - 2989
60.5 - 3044
60.8 - 3051

No heavy lift. No pressure signs on primers or head stamps

Will proceed with groups at 60.0 and 60.6.

If one shows promise, will experiment with jump a little… but looks like this gun wanted a little more powder to reach 3000fps than some other guns.

Maybe I missed it , what brand of brass are you using? A larger brass volume may play a part in your lower velocity you’re seeing.

I had a bunch of mixed head stamps that I sorted into Super-X, R&P, and win.
So initial ladder was with Super-x(old cases).
Since then, a Starline Order came in and the speeds matched the SuperX. All the mixed headstamps are set aside and will probably get dropped off at the range for others.
For the Barnes TTSX, I’m using new Norma brass.

I shot three groups with the SGK H4831 60.5, and trying different seating depths. Best group was 3.295 about 1.25”, the other two were 1.5”… so not a big change… will get a little closer to the lands. Will stick with the Starline. If I don’t get the SGK shooting better, could move on to Accubonds or partitions..

SGK has done well for me in different calibers over the years especially in the 270 Win. You might have to try another powder with this bullet if you don't achieve the group size, you're comfortable with. Dan.

I had a Remington CDL limited edition in 280rem that I could not get to shoot for the life of me, no matter what projectile or powder or primer. A borescope showed some irregularities after I had changed , triggers, scopes, mounts etc. A new barrel and it will shoot 0.5moa if I have a good day and the wind is kind. Just a thought as it can get expensive chasing accuracy when the rifle is actually never capable of it. Food for thought.
