Scotty,
A 300 H&H is simply a 30/06 with a box of Hornady Superformance ammo to go with it !
(No offensive to the wonderful folks on here that love their Hollands )
Just sayin.

Ha! I shot my first cow elk with a rebarreled Mod 70 FWT classic (23" barrel too) in 30-06 and used the "then new" 180SP Hornady Light Magnum ammo. It clocked an honest 2910fps. That's right with the older 300 H&H factory 180 ammo. It was a killer! That same year, I tried the Federal High Energy 180PT load and they clocked 2970! I gave that rifle to a Missionary friend of mine in south Africa who killed gobs of stuff, up to and including eland with it. So, 300 H&H "ballistics" are indeed excellent on game! I have read where some guys get those speeds in their handloads but I never did, not in several 30-06s later even. I don't know what the new Superformance loads or powder can do in one now, haven't used an '06 for years. Because of that previous experience, I never messed with any 300 Winmag that didn't get 3100 with a 180gr! But they recoiled more than the '06 did too!
