All,
I have for 10 years followed this order.
1) lube, Resize, graphite neck
2) Trim, and neck turn if necessary
3) clean primer pocket
4) debur flash hole
5) set primer
6) Poweder
7) bullet
8) test/measure runnout etc...

on the forster site, and instructions, they recommend that you trim and neck turn before sizing and decapping. What are your thoughts? Reason that I checked is that on a new die, the opening for the bullet was slightly smaller, making neck turning impossible with my collet. Always worked for all of my other dies. All from Forster...
thanks,

I've always trimmed after resizing, it sounds like an expader ball problem, put a caliper inside a resized case and see what your reading. you can also see how bullet seats in aresized case. IF the case neck is real tight on the bullet it can cause some grief.

Hardpan,

I agree that the order is not what I would expect. Because there is some drawing of the brass as the expander ball is withdrawn, intuitively, I would think that trimming would follow sizing. I've used Forster dies for years, and they are well designed and can turn out excellent ammunition. However, even their instructions recommend trimming, if necessary, following resizing. I checked the instruction sheet that comes with their dies, and it says, "Resizing will stretch the case neck, so check the overall length and trim if necessary."

I have always trimmed after sizing, not before.

thought so. I use their dies exclusively, but never saved those instructions.

I rechecked their online instructions. It is a PDF, not sure how to download, but it clearly states to trim first.... I will contact them directly.

Let us know what they have to say.

Guys, I am surprised by this, but here is their reply on neck turning. So, fire, turn, then size... I guess that the turning and trimming are done at different times.

Dear Michael,

Thank you for noticing and calling to our attention the discrepancy in our two sets of instructions. You are correct that Outside Neck Turning should be performed just after firing and before sizing.

We still need to clarify our Sizing die instructions to say what we mean! In our sizing die instructions we are trying to say that if your case walls are varying in thickness...you should get the cases neck turned after the next firing. When this next cycle is completed your brass becomes a much more accurate component for your ensuing sizing & seating operations.

I hope this information is clear and helpful to you. We apologize for not getting it to you sooner.

Please let us know if you have any further questions/concerns.

Regards,
