Once you get elk in your blood you are going to turn into a savage ELK hunter. I feel it. Scotty
Savage Elk hunter? Kinda like Remingtons more :p. Seriously , good chance of getting me hooked.

I knew after I wrote that you were going to stick on the Savage part!

Yeah, I would bet money you are going to jump up and down like a 14 year old once you have an elk down. I am pretty sure I will too though, and I have already taken a couple! Heck, when you get your first elk and I see its down, it is going to be hard for me to control myself and I usually just tackle the shooter.. It is all the happiness in me that needs to get out! I am sure it will be a great hunt. Hope to get Brandon out the following year. Should be a good tradition to get our boys in. Scotty

Sounds like you will need to keep some happiness to yourself! Of course Big B next year and Crazy Fred in a few years.

254x is a horrible unit, wouldn't waste my time in there :)

That is what I heard from someone too. Figure Brian will have time to pick weeds and such in order to fry for evening chow if we can't find any elk!

Brian, I am so amped up to see you on your first elk! I am telling you, just be prepared for it. It is going to happen. I can't stop myself. I am going to be happier that you! Scotty

I know i will just go out of my head at the first up close with one. Just don't tackle me with the dead fish and buckskins after I shoot one!

Brian, it is too late, it is already in my head and you know stuff just doesn't rattle loose when it gets in there!

It could be the smallest spike in Oregon, but man, when you are sitting next to it, you are going to be crazy with excitement. There is no better feeling that your first elk, at least next to your child birth...

Plus, I will be there with the extra buckskins and fish for you to eat and wear for pictures! Scotty

254X is right across the road from 256 where it all started with the trophy bulls (only 21 branch bull tags). The big bulls spilled over to 254 and the elk move toward their winter range from 256 so the spikes are there in the late season also. Have a real good time!

Scotty knows what I'm talking about lol, I was being a bit sarcastic.

Just be prepared to hunt your rear end off for a full 5 days and hope you get some kinda early weather to move em around off the top out of the trees and into the canyons where you can see em.

I dont like 1st season because you only got 5 days and you usually never have any snow to push the elk in the canyons.

2nd season is a bit better for me because you have 9 days and you usually have some snow or bad weather that gets the elk moving around a bit. Also the pressure from 1st season will put a few elk in the canyons as well.

We've been hunting the north fork of umatilla for round 30 years or so. Taken a pile of elk outta there over the years, thats for sure.

Either way, good luck up there guys! You will see lots of elk, big bulls, cows, raghorns, but you will have to work to see, and get a shot at a spike, so when ya do, ya better make it count!!!

Thanks! It should be a great first time elk hunt.

I assumed it was all in good fun :p. I'm counting the days till I see my first Elk out hunting them.

Good luck old boy! You will have a blast!

I can't believe I am the first to ask this, (if I'm not, sorry for not paying more attention) but:

"What shootin iron do you plan to take with you?"

Ah, Scotty isn't carrying a rifle. He has some rotten fish in his buckskins, or so I'm told. Brian is looking for an elk that tries to hide behind a half-inch of steel.

This should be a sight. If we do have to shoot through steel, I will defer those shots to Brian! I will likely have my 338WM and something else? Haven't really decided on the 2nd rifle, probably the Whelen though. Scotty

All Scotty "Stinky Pete" has is his buckskins and a rotten fish in his pocket. Could kill an Elk from 25 yards with his "sushi". I call it rotten fish!.

Man, never a dull moment on here! Scotty

Like old Bear Claw Chris said on Jeremiah Johnson, "I can't figure out why folks wanna feed on hogs when they could be feeding on elk!"

And here in Oregon we have a very abundant supply of those tasty critters running around.

The 338 won't fail you, neither would the Whelen, they are both great choices for elk.

I agree FJ! Bear Claw is certainly first and foremost in my decision making process. No hog meat for this kid! Scotty
