Took the nephew out calling yotes yesterday. He jumped in with me and I went and finished a small job off in the morning , then it was hunting our way back home.
The first stand was interrupted before we even got into position as the local grader man decided it was a good day to run the V- plow thru the back road we planned on hiking down.
Next stand was a long narrow bush along a ravine that made a big C. We settled in along the treelike and turned up the " Foxpro " with lightning jack. And after 15 minutes we were anoint to call it when 2 yodel dog heads appeared south and east of us. Chili was the trigger man and I told him to get ready, the first dog showed himself and meandered thru the shooting lane before he could settle the x hairs. So when dog #2 stopped in the shooting lane I whispered take him. Boom, both dogs on the run now, Chili shot just underneath the last one . Not sure if he pulled the shot or was just a bit excited but it was a 150 yrd clean miss... Bummer.
This is his first time hunting with me using the call and he may have been excited , although he has taken yotes before as targets of opportunity ussually during biggame season , that and he was shooting my vanguard instead of his own rifle..
Second stand was just a random field again with all long draw of bush running on a north south line along the east side of the field. Wind was a slight SE breeze , bright sun and about -12*C . We settled in like before this time he was 30 yrds to the east of me. I flashed up lightning jack once again quiet at first and over a period of about 3 minutes I slowly bump the volume. Once again a good fifteen minutes had passed and I hadn't seen a thing I was about to call it and boom. Then I hear ki yi ki yi, I can't see the yodeller but I know that sound . I yell shoot again, he had hit him a bit far back and was doing the spin , Chili fired the second shot as I was running over to him the yodeller dropped in mid spin.. He had his first ever called in dog, a nice male.
Our last 2 stands had no shows .. But for after such a long cold spell it was nice to get out.. We got some exercise too as we walked a min of a 1/4 mile each time from the truck thru snow 6"-12" deep. And last stand we were 3/4 mile from the truck , it sure looked like a winner on a long beave damned up slough.
