Penetration testing

I keep thinking I'm going to sell that .500 S&W. Never seem to get around to doing so.

Got it when they were new, and have only used it for having fun at the range. Every year I load some ammo for it, take it to the range a couple of times a year. Doubt I shoot 100 rounds a year through it. But it sure has been a lot of fun. Accurate too.

Never have hunted with it. The .44 though, it's been out in the field a lot and I've shot deer with a .44 before. So much lighter and easier to carry than the .500 revolver. Still, I'd like to take a wild hog or an elk, or something with the .500 someday.

Regards, Guy

That 500 is a beast! I eyeball them everytime I see one at the gun counter. Your right though. Pretty serious weight compared To a 44.

I love my 500 man.

700 gr T-rex bullets at 1238 fps average.

on the right!

I usually set up milk jugs at around 200 yards to see how to bullet will react at the actual distance it will hit the animal. But shooting them at point blank is fun as well, especially if it is shower day

I see alot of youtube videos of guys lining up milk jugs with water to test bullets and loads and have been wanting to try that myself. One thing I notice is they usually shoot these jugs pretty much point blank, so I was thinking of getting some real world results if I do this and put jugs out at say a 100 yards which is the norm of most shots people take. Do any of you do this? Any thoughts?

JD338 got me over the hill and I started doing some testing myself finally. These three are at 100 yards and I next want to do a 300 yard test to see how they do. I expect the Partition to do "what a Partition does" which is perform superbly and I expect the same of the AccuBond. Curious to see though how the E-Tip is going to perform after slowing down a bit. Here is what each is left to right and muzzle velocity.

6mm Rem. 90 gr. E-tip at 3160 fps- 30-06 165 gr. AccuBond 2940 fps- 6mm Rem. 100 gr.@3100

It's funny, without even reading your post I recognized the E-tip, the AccuBond and the Partition all from a glance at the photo...

Hmmmm. That E-Tip does look impressive. I've used the other two, mostly the Partition, but never an E-Tip. JD338 keeps trying to get me to use some E-Tips... It's on my list, but dang, I've got a pile of other Nosler bullets on hand already!

Good stuff fellas. I always refered to this as dinkin' around. I used to shoot into water soaked phone books ans switched over to the water jugs. Water is a very hard test media and close range shots at top end velocities will indeed test the design of the bullet.

I shoot out to 300 yds but another way to test at longer ranges is to use a smaller cartridge. Example being a 300 RUM 180 gr bullet at top end speed. Try loading the same bullet in a 30-30 and shoot it at say 200 yds. I am guessing here but it would simulate the 300 RUM at 600-700 yds, you get the idea....

Guy that E-Tip sure has worked on deer, antelope, and one elk for my son. It retained 98.8%, the AccuBond 70%, and the Partition 65%. JD I'm just going to have to try 300, but I completely understand your thinking on this. Problem.......I don't own any slow 6mm's, slow 30's, or slow 25's (25-06 of my wife's), so I'm just going to have to shoot well and make sure my jugs are lined up nicely! Now I know someone's going to bite on that one! JD I also want to try the 50 yarder like you did to see how it is close-up and personal.

A couple of months ago I tried using my .30-30 at 20 yards to simulate the velocity of faster .30 cal rifles at long range... Didn't work out too well - I kept losing bullets out the sides of the gallon jugs, then I ran out of plastic jugs. Have a decent supply of them again, so I'll give it another go soon I hope.

6mm Remington what are the weights of each of those bullets. Looks to me that the Partition has only retained 60% of its, not what a light cal really can afford when big game hunting. :?

GM the Partition weighed 65 grains for 65% weight retention. All three were recovered from gallon jug number 6 at 100 yards so they all penetrated to the same water bottle. I've used the 100 gr. Partition in my 6mm for years and it's shot a lot of antelope, deer, and one spike bull. It's always done a great job. On the spike, he was in heavy timber at about 30 yards on a really ugly steep slope and I didn't want him going anyplace so I hit him in the center of his right shoulder. He was turned just enough that the Partition exited out the left side just in front of his left shoulder. He staggered about 6 steps and stood there and I'm sure was going to drop but I didn't want to chance him getting his adrenaline up so I shot him at the base of the ear and he went right down. I never recovered the bullet as I stated it exited, but by all accounts it did a great job especially hitting him at almost full speed and taking out shoulder bone.

I have been impressed though by the E-Tip but have not shot any YET in my #1B.

How about a 200gr AccuBond out of my 300RUM going 3200 on 1/2" ballistic steel at 75 yards. Went through like
a laser beam! Our group had been shooting it with pistols at the end of the day. I step up to the bench to shoot a few milk jugs with the 300RUM. Well a few guys talked me into shooting the steel. The Guy that had brought that target said the AccuBond would never go through! Guess who the forum member is behind the target.

This was out of the dirt @ 600 yards. It is a 200 ET out of a 338 WM, impact should of been right around that 1800 fps. I know its not the milk jug test, but it is around the 1800 fps.

Let's go over once again what is concealment and what is cover...
You would think half inch steel would be cover??????

Not with a rifle.

One of the guys was shooting it with an AR-15 and Steel core penetrating FMJs. All the FMJs did was knock the paint off.

Maybe I should have said a high intensity rifle cartridge. A 308 Win will penetrate 1/2" at 100 yds too.
