We drove through St. Helens' ash coming to Canada in '80. Hit it in WY, continued and grew thicker in MT, ID, WA. Pictures from that trip as we stopped to eat lunch looked as if we were driving through snow. Interesting days, and no doubt more so for all who were on the ground in the shadow of the ash plume.

I was on a flight from Portland to LA and we flew right past it ! Impressive sight for sure! Continued on to Fiji to fly a year contract with Fiji Air, Columbia Pictures were finishing shooting the Blue Lagoon so got to fly Brooks Shields and her Mom back and forth to Mainland all the time. Think she was like 15 years old.
